Surrealism is an artistic movement, and an aesthetic philosophy that aims for the liberation of the mind by emphasizing the critical and imaginative powers of the unconscious. Surrealism originated in early 20th century European avant-garde art and literary circles, and many early surrealists had been involved with the Dada movement. An expressly revolutionary movement, surrealism encompassed actions intended to advance radical political, social, cultural and personal change.
