Prince Vlad Draculea

Posted Jun 19, 2005, 1:38:22 AM UTC
Well, boys and girls, here's my rendition of Prince Vlad Draculea also known as Vlad Tepes (Impaler). He was Prince of Wallachia, Romania in the 1400s and was responsible for freeing his people from Turkish rule. He is considered a hero among his people even to this day. I also drew the Dracul Family Crest(in the upper right hand corner). And for those of you who don't know, the phrase "Justus Et Pius" means "Harsh but Just." I think it describes my favorite Prince perfectly.

Guestie the Steamroller...? Not really that catchy is it? Doesn't roll off the tongue as well as I'd hoped (quieten your filthy mind)... "Hi there Guestie the Steamroller..." No, it just doesn't work... C+ Must try harder.

Quieten my filthy mind? What? I didn't say anything. Angel Innocent heehee. Damn! You haven't even been a member that long and you already know me too well. Ah, well. I will try to think of a cool nick name for you. One look at your avatar made me thing "Guestie the Tongue Bandit" but that might get you the WRONG kind of attention. Wink I will let you know when I come up with something cool. I have my thinking cap on. And no it isn't going to be dirty. Hush you. Laughing

The tongue bandit! Ha ha ha... or so the missus wishes eh?! At last, I've found a use for that highwayman outfit! Cheers Lady79!!
        • Aug 15, 2005, 9:55:19 AM UTC
Cheers right back. ^_^ I thought the name was rather catchy myself. Though I don't know very many people who will be too intimidated by the "Tongue Bandit." Maybe we should think of something else. And what in the bloody hell does the highway man outfit have to do with it? Laughing Ah well. I need another drink...
  • Aug 11, 2005, 4:37:15 AM UTC
I vont to Count! Von... Tooo... etc etc...
Great details and shading on this chap, why can't I have a nickname like "the impaler"? Suppose I'd better start impaling people eh? Any volunteers?
    • Aug 11, 2005, 9:54:56 AM UTC
Why thank you so much. I vont to suck your blood? There. I said it so you don't have to. Wink As for impaling people, well, I guess it depends on what kind of impaling you are doing. Wink Don't blame me. Blame my mind... mayebe we can call you Guestie the SteamRoller? No? Well, I tried.

It's a wonderful rendition, very well done and detailed. A great character/person to put to paper. Much more befitting then early hollywoods version of him, in my opinion, I think the best adaptation of him was played by Gary Oldman. This reminds me of his portrale. Similar facial features to his portrait. curious, Did you use refrence? or perhaps a dream? It is a brilliant work. + fav

Wow! What a brilliant compliment coming from you. I completely agree that Gary Oldman porttrayed him the best from anyone else that I have seen. Another great Vlad portrayer is Rudolf Martin in the movie "Dark Prince...the True Story of Dracula. "That is my favorite rendition of the real character of him. I did this one from an old painting that had been done of him. I decided to put in his family's crest though. It is refreshing to see that so many people enjoy the enigma that is this man. He is my favorite piece of history. Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment. ^_^

Woooooooow! This is amazing! I think I've seen this portrait before, and I have to say I like yours even better ^_~ This is awesome; you totally captured him.
    • Jul 5, 2005, 8:25:46 AM UTC
Wow! What a compliment. Thank you so much, hun. He is my most favorite part of history and I wanted to immortalize him with a drawing. I am so glad that people like this one. I am sure he would love that fact too. Thanks again for always stickiing by me. I wuv you.
      • Jul 5, 2005, 12:16:52 PM UTC
I think he would be very pleased, yes! You did an awesome job immortalizing him; I've always thought he was fascinating, too, and it's cool to see other people know about him/like him enough to draw him, as well ^_^ Great job! (I wuv you too! Corky Smile

I'm new here and just looking around. I know the picture you used to draw this and you're right, the lower area does just seem to disappear. I really like this. Vlad was an interesting character, to say the least. Not someone I'd like to have as an enemy. I think you did him justice. Good job.
    • Jun 24, 2005, 9:41:23 AM UTC
Finally I have someone who knows what I was trying to say about the picture. Thank you so much for having my back on this one. See that, everyone? I am justified in my methods of madness! Hey , if you like the site , why not join? We have tons of fun here and plus, it's a free membership. Thanks again for your support. Wink
  • Jun 20, 2005, 10:30:31 AM UTC
Yup! That looks far better. Looking at the original portrait, I can see that his hair -was- covering his shoulders, but the hair also lay across the page wuite a bit poofier than your original drawing, which made the shoulder are look odd. No matter, you've fixed it, and it's wonderful. Bounce
    • Jun 20, 2005, 10:39:47 AM UTC
Thank you so much. I am so glad you know which one I was drawing it from. That helps alot. I also think I did the eyes a little different than in the picture, but, I think I still pulled his essence off none the less. Thank you again for all of the guidance you have given me. I am so appreciative. ^_^ BTW, we have missed you in the forums. *laughs*
      • Jun 20, 2005, 9:04:49 PM UTC
Fixed the forum deali-o. I've been really caught up with an issue at work lately, but it's been sorted out now. Smile

As long as there are pictures (especially portraits and other things within my area of knowledge) I will be around to critique them! Well.. Until I die, at least.
        • Jun 20, 2005, 10:15:20 PM UTC
Good. Because I think we'd be lost without you. *laughs* We even started a party on the forums for you. Did you see that? ^_^
          • Jun 20, 2005, 10:21:13 PM UTC
Laughing Yup. If you look in the forums, too, you'll see that I saw. Tongue
            • Jun 20, 2005, 10:26:55 PM UTC
That's what I'm doing now. I have come to realize that we are all either completely insane, or my stupidity is very communicable. But, at least we have fun, eh?
              • Jun 20, 2005, 10:34:01 PM UTC
Priorities before treatment. Fun is #1 priority. I will never be treated for my mental insanity.

Stupid - nope. I have blond moments, but I know I'm not stupid, and therefore you are not either.
                • Jun 20, 2005, 10:44:50 PM UTC
Oh, how nice of you to say I'm not stupid. *laughs* I find it odd that you have blonde moments when you are not a blonde. *smiles* Just kidding. Hey, if we get to out of control in the forums, maybe BogusRed will give us some kind of mood stabilizers. But where would the fun be in that?
                  • Jun 20, 2005, 10:48:33 PM UTC
Wink I think we go more out of control/off topic on art comments, personally. LOL! And I may not be blond - but I have blond roots. My hair didn't start going auburn until I was around 6 or 7...
                    • Jun 20, 2005, 10:54:27 PM UTC
Well, I'm naturally blonde, (shh! Don't tell anyone) but I dye my hair bright red. The only thing is that I have to dye it every 2 weeks to keep the color vibrant which gets pretty dang expensive. I think we do get off-topic because we forget that we are in the commenting page. Or, at least I do.
                      • Jun 20, 2005, 10:59:42 PM UTC
I never dye my hair... Mainly because it would die, literally, in more ways than one. *sigh* I used to use henna, though.
                        • Jun 20, 2005, 11:07:02 PM UTC
You are not kidding there. It really sucks because my hair is long. So I really have to invest in good hair care treatments to keep it looking killer. I take great pride in my appearance. I'm anal like that. ^_^
                          • Jun 20, 2005, 11:10:22 PM UTC
LOL! And I could usually care less about what people think of my appearance. All that matters to me in that I feel healthy. (I posted a new picture, by the by)
                            • Jun 20, 2005, 11:16:48 PM UTC
Cool... I'm going to go check it out. I logged on here to post the pic I did of my tattoo but I spaced it. I think it's because I am in the process of drinking a Mudslide right now. My 3rd in a row to be exact. Have you ever had one? Good stuff. As a matter of fact, I am finding that it is getting a little bit harder to spell. *laughs* It shouldn't matter to me what people think of how I look , but I have always had a poor self image even though I am generally a pretty cute girl. I guess I just want to be the very best me that I can be. Very "We are the World" huh?
                              • Jun 20, 2005, 11:20:26 PM UTC
LOL! I think my lack of care for my looks generally stems from always being given mixed reviews no matter what I look like. One person tells me I'm ugly and fat, and the other tells me I'm beautiful and toned. Therefore, I've come to the conclusion that the only person I need to satisfy is myself, and to satisfy myself, all I really need to do is stay fit (something which I am currently not). And yes - You post that tatoo!
                                • Jun 20, 2005, 11:25:06 PM UTC
I used to be overwight when I was a kid. Then I went through my "dark phase" and the weight dropped off. That is until I got pregnant. But, luckily, with alot of hard work and diet pills and exercise, I have dropped my baby weight and am back down to a good size. You are right that you should only please yourself. You shouldn't change yourself for anybody. Don't worry about staying fit. I think you are very pretty judging by your pics. (So not trying to lez out, just offering a compliment) and you have a great personality which is what is most attractive in people I think.
                                  • Jun 20, 2005, 11:30:15 PM UTC
*blush* <---See what you made me do?

Meh. I'm comfortable with my sexuality. Having another girl compliment me on my looks is just that - a compliment. Not a come-on... (usually)

I think we should either continue this in PMs, though, or just stop altogether. We're clogging the page, luv.
                                    • Jun 20, 2005, 11:32:54 PM UTC
True, true. Besides, I think Vlad would be quite pissed if he knew that his critique section was being used for girly matters. ^_^ Talk to you later. Oh, I just posted the drawing of my tattoo up. I think it's pretty.

Sorry its taken me so long to comment on this, Father's Day stuff and my son took me hiking for the last couple of days. Apologies.
I like what you've done here with all of the little details, the pearls on his crown are marvelous and I noticed that you even put highlight shades on each individual pearl! That must of been hell on your hand. Anyways they turned out great.
His eyes also look marvelous, very soulful and the depth effect in them is stunning. You are very skilled at rendering gorgeous eyes with a lot of life in them.
Another thing I noticed is the buttons, very intricate, almost as intricate as the family seal which i'm glad you added.
In all I must say that the job you did on this is at the very least is worth a standig ovation (that how you spell it?). You did an awsome job on this Kristina and I am truly impressed with your quickly developing skills.
One question though, how much background histirical research did you have to do to get the all of the details on Vlad? I bet it was daunting task and it just go's to show you the commitment you have to the craft.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
    • Jun 20, 2005, 12:14:06 AM UTC
I think I'm going to cry. Thank you so much Dennis. First off, I hope you had a great Father's Day. Second, the pearls were quite a daunting task. I had to stop a couple of times to get the circulation flowing back through my fingers. I appreciate what you said about the eyes. I try my very best at them because I believe the soul is held within the eyes. And if you don't get that part right, you'll end up with something less than what you were striving for. I am so impressed that you even noticed the buttons. Al in all, I am so pleased that you commented on this picture. I have been obsessed with Vlad since I was 10 years old. I have read so much about him throughout the years. I admire him (not his methods) . He brought his country to peace from the Turks and he should be commended for that. So, I do my part by drawing him. The Dracul Family Crest is How they chose to symbolize "The Order of the Dragon" . That's what Dracul means... dragon. And Dracula means son of the dragon. Okay, I'll be quiet now and let you get back to work. Thank you ever so much.

That's a good boy. I don't think I'll have to punish you now. Go ahead and stop bowing. And get some ice or heat for that back. Whatever works. Can't have you seizing up on me. *laughs* Man, I get really retarded when I'm sleepy. But, oh well. At least you're not on here alone right now.

Warning! It is really addictive series and there's over 500 pages of laughable material there! Big Smile

Oooo, I like it alot!! I can tell you put quite the amount of time on this!! It is wonderful!! ^^ I hope you are proud of it, because you should be!! I think this has to be one of your better ones.
    • Jun 19, 2005, 6:16:18 PM UTC
Thanks alot, Jelli Melli. ^_^ I am quite proud of this one. I put alot of grueling hours into it. The headdress especially. I am currently redoing a couple parts of it, though. He has no shoulders for instance. Plus I want to darken the Family Crest to make it catch the eye more. I don't think I'll ever put any color into it, though. I like it in graphite. Thanks so much for your wonderful compliment, hun. I am glad we get to share in each other's work like this. ^_^
  • Jun 19, 2005, 1:34:03 PM UTC
You've definitely put a lot of effort and work on this picture. You know, I don't know much about his life, but I was always fascinated by him. It's a very lovely picture. Well done.
    • Jun 19, 2005, 6:00:49 PM UTC
The headdress and the hair were the worst of it. That was very time consuming. It was a slow on-going process. I am glad I got it done, though. I need to go back and revise it though because I have a problem with the shoulders. It was so hard to tell what was what in the photo I did this off of and I regret that I have to fix his shoulders. Oh well. It shouldn't take me that long. Wish me luck. Anytime you want a history lesson on him, just let me know. I am an avid fan of his and I know quite a bit about him. Did you know that he is the man Bram Stoker fashioned his Dracula character from?
      • Jun 19, 2005, 7:15:04 PM UTC
That I do know. Please give me a history lesson on him. I would like to learn more about him.
  • Jun 18, 2005, 9:16:04 PM UTC
ooo!!! I had to do a 9 page report on him last month! I was so awesome! ^_^ Well, not as awesome as your pic. ^_^ You did a great job!
    • Jun 19, 2005, 8:12:13 AM UTC
Your school really let you do a report on him? Sweet!! I once asked my teacher if I could do a report on him and he threw a fit about it. He looked like he wanted to exorcise me or something. I have been obsessed with Vlad since I was 10 years old and read Bram Stoker's Dracula for the first time.
      • Jun 20, 2005, 9:08:27 AM UTC
They didn't only let me, they asked me to. I'm really homeschooled. But I go to co-op. It's like school once a week with a bunch of homeschooled kids. Luv homeschooling. I'm 3 grades ahead thanks to it. ^_^ BUt in that, I get to do reports on what I want. I do as I please. lol
  • Jun 18, 2005, 9:04:56 PM UTC
You've put quite a lot of work into that hat, my dear. Excellent job on the details. He looks a lot more soft-hearted than I imagine. Tongue The only real problem I can see, though, is that I can't exactly tell where his shoulders fall...

This is a big jump from your older portraits - you've taken more time in the shading and facial features, and especially clothing details. All in all, you've done an awesome job. Kudos!

Thank you so much, hun. That hat was a b*tch to do. all of those pearls... I couldn't tell where the shoulders fell in the picture that I was drawing it from either. Most of it was all dark so, you really couldn't see much towards the lower half of the photo. It had a very dark background that was just meshed in with his hair and his robes and everything else, so I had to do a bit of guess-work on some of the details. Maybe I'll go back and do something different with it later. For now I'm pretty comfortable with it. Thank you so much for the wonderful comments. I appreciate the time you took to review my picture. ^_^

I appreciate you telling me about it. I thought something looked amiss, but I was just so damn happy to finally be done with it, that I completely over-looked it. I am currently working on the shoulder area and hope to have the revision posted tomorrow. Thanks again for all of your help. Your critiques mean so much to me because you are awesome and I think I could learn alot from your reviews. ^_^

I am done with the revisions. Let me know if it looks any better, okay? I don't think I would ever get tired of drawing Vlad. Anything else, maybe. But not the Impaler Prince. ^_^
