The Cair

Posted Feb 22, 2016, 5:50:56 PM UTC

3D sculpture experiment based on an illustration of the Narnian Castle Cair Paravel by the books' original illustrator, Pauline Baynes.

Constructed in Bryce. Mostly basic geometric solids and mouse-drawn symmetrical lattices, but all the textures/colors except the rooftile red came with the program.

(I'm having trouble finding the medium option for digital 3D, either pre-constructed or otherwise...)

We should add it if we don't have it. I'll make a note and get it added for you and get back to you.

It's possible I was just having trouble navigating the menu as a newbie, as well.

Looking good! I tried 3DsMax once and those 3D programs are tricky to use. It's a big skill to me to see what 3D artists can do with polygons and skins Smile They're great skills to have though for drawing- I should play with my Sculpy more cause that use to help me visualize in 3D in the same way too Smile

Thanks. Smile 3D stuff can be awkward to work with, and there are still a lot of subjects which feel really intimidating and "I'm not doing that" - but when it comes out ok it feels quite rewarding.

Ah, Sculpy can be cool. ^_^ Have you played with it much in the past? Any favorite subjects to model?

Oh- I've done a couple of busts and I should do more cause it was really rewarding to work with. I've just had a dramatic last few years so it got put on hold like a lot of other things did. Humans right now though- it's what I'm familiar with.

Are you taking a course on 3D animation?
        • Feb 24, 2016, 2:49:09 AM UTC
Cool. ^_^ Busts are something I haven't tried - occasionally a little animal or something.

No, I'm not - coursework has been mostly traditional media - Bryce is just something I picked up because it looked cool, and go back to sporadically. My dad works with computers for a living and sometimes he finds software on sale.

Oh- sweet Smile Is it hard to use?

I don't know how well it compares to other programs, honestly? It took me a while to get used to it. I would pull up some of my earlier stuff for comparison, only I lost a bunch of that awhile ago via computer bug... >.<

Ouch- I hope you back up your files regularly now. I had a scare a while ago and I know I do now!

...I did for awhile. My backup drive has been struggling to read something in the files these past few times, and shutting down partway through the backup, which... concerns me. Some of my stuff is saved to the cloud but I don't know that that's a safe way to go with everything because my cloud stuff also syncs with my phone and if all my graphics were there as well as my documents, how much phone memory would I have left?
Another reason to put as much as I can in galleries online - yeah there's a risk somebody might steal it, but I know there are multiple copies for me to recover from if something goes wrong before I can work out whatever snarl is keeping me from backing up.

Urgh- but where do you store high res versions? :/ I think get another back up drive. The cost for a drive is dropping every day. I have a 2TB one that was super cheep and holds way more than my cluttered My Docs / Pics can hold. It's worth saving up for if you can't outright buy it. You could start your computer any day and lose everything. That happened to me a few months ago when I installed Office, and it deleted my My documents. All my writing since I was a teenager gone. I had old versions on an old IDE hard drive from 2 computers ago so I was lucky, but lost a few files that I'll never get back Sad

*pained whimper* All your stuff since you were a teen?!

I've still got hardcopy of at least some of my stuff for re-scan value. Things that've been sold off or damaged in some way, and the 3D stuff are the big concerns... There are a lot of homemade objects on the internal library on Bryce that I would lose anytime I needed to reinstall.

Yeah- I lost a Starwars Play I wrote for my Cub Scout pack which was super cute, and a few obscure versions of my Dragon Twins story. I'll miss the plays, but the others were likely just junk ideas. Most taht I made between the hard drive and my current computer were gone though. Luckily it wasn't that many. It could've been way worse. I was lucky I got the old files thoguh- the IDE hard drive wasn't compatible with my computer. I had to take it and put it into an ancient PC at work that had IDE ports which was luckily modern enough to have USB ports or I may have had to put it onto a 3 1/4 floppy or burn it to CD D: Ah- technology :/
