It's always weird to draw something in a more cartoony style after spending so much time practicing realism. But it's kinda fun, too.
This was my first go at a character reference sheet, and long overdue, since the character has been around for more than half my life. Yikes!
It contains a bit of information about him, but from around the midpoint in his story, which is where most of my writing/roleplaying/character development for him took place. It's the most versatile point in his timeline, I think.
I rarely draw him in the same outfit twice, but I really liked this one, so I've since sketched him in it a few more times and am working on sewing a version of it for my ball-jointed doll of the same character. Or, uh, I'm working on trying to find fabric in that shade of blue...

No, really though- if it's a useful strap, then there's nothing wrong with it. That's my policy
I do try to keep stuff more practical in design now, though.
I wanna touch his hands... XD
Heh, and it is nice to let loose with cartoony styles and be more relaxed with details then you can be with realistic drawings.
But I think I wouldn't want to get on your OC's bad side. XD
And you're right, it's really nice to be able to do something more relaxed after putting so much effort into my studies lately. I've been trying to make time to draw more no matter what I draw, and I've been enjoying it a lot. ^^
