JUNGLE GIRL

JUNGLE GIRL - My second oldest painting. I still have it and won't sell it. This is the one that, when I took it in for a big pro-am art show in Los Angeles, everybody was very snooty to me saying , "Oh that's just illustration". There was a 2 x 4 yellow board leaning up against the wall and when I bent down to remove it, someone yelled "DON'T TOUCH THE ART!!!!" A board painted yellow leaning against the wall was a piece of art by someone. I decided then and there that I was an illustrator, because illustrators have to have talent.

I like it. It reminds me a bit of a front piece in an old anthology of Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli stories that I admired as a child. Smile

And I guess I never thought of illustration and art as separate before. So much famous representational Art was MADE to tell stories - although a lot of 'em were big stories in the public consciousness, myths and fables and religious narratives, rather than more recent works.
