Autumn Fay - Tinted

Artists

Artist's Comments

She's finally done, and now I can't get a decent scan, nor can I seem to satisfactorily adjust the levels.  The ugly weird blotches of colours aren't visible in the original.  *sigh*  That's the trouble with tinting.  It's so subtle, the computer has troubles picking it up properly.  Oh well.

Please let me know what you think now we've been through so much with this picture!

[emoticon] AHHHH!!! It is so incredibly gorgeous!! I LOVE how it looks with the tinting. The slight touches of color really bring it to life. I know I said some of this on the other postings, but the Fay is absolutely beautiful and I love the little pixies. The shading is breath taking, especially on the tree, the ground, and the bushes. I LOVE it Robin! This is exactly what I had imagined when I made my request and so much more. You are so extraordinarily talented! Thank you SO much! [emoticon] Since you are the one it is most important to please with this drawing, your comment makes me exceedingly happy! If I can fix the scan up and make a print of her for myself, I will be sending this off to you ASAP. There's just those few things I need to do (I like to keep copies at least for my portfolio, you see.)

awesome detail. perhaps desaturate it a little and tint it again? that might help.

I've tried. It looks washed out when I desaturated it a little bit, and takes away from the values as well...

How can I tint it AGAIN? It's done by hand, luv. Unless you meant something else, in which case, please explain?

Ah well, at least I'm happy with the original. I just don't want to spend any more hours trying to make a scan look perfect, since the scan isn't the most important part anyhow.

Oh! Thank you so much for commenting, BR!

Ooooh ok. Desaturate it in photoshop and then use photoshop to tint it via color balance. there is more than one way to desaturate in photoshop. one is through image > adjustments > desaturate but that's probably the one you tried that didn't give you accurate values. So try the other method which is image > mode >grey scale. then do image > mode >rgb to change it back and then go to image > adjustments >color balance and tint it to the color you want. if that works anyway. it's worth a shot since it only takes 15 seconds to do.

I see what you're talking about now. Unfortunately, since this is tinted in the 'old photo' way with many different colours, merely colourizing the picture doesn't come anywhere near what I want to do. I would have to lose the greens, reds, or yellows by doing that and I also lose the original colour of the pencil lines.

This one was adjusted from the original scan using curves and levels. Really, it's the puke-green splat on the ground that's really bugging me. Maybe I can single that part out and try.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write down the explanation. Otherwise I probablyw ould never have known what it was you meant me to do. [emoticon]

Oh sweetie, I am sorry about the problem you are having with your scanner. Like I told you last night, it really does look wonderful. But of course, we don't have the original to see, so we don't know just how much is being taken away from it. I think the worst"blotchyness" is in front of her on the ground. But that isn't even too bad. The whole thing is really easy on the eyes and it does look so much better than just the pencil sketch. It breathes life into it. Do you just tint it with your watercolors or what? Well anyway, it looks like an old-fashioned photograph like this. You know the ones I am talking about? It is quite lovely and EBS is sooo lucky to have such a beautiful drawing. All my love and huggles and smoochies.

[emoticon] I was trying to make it look kind of like those old tinted photos. I'm glad that comes to mind when you see this! Now if only I could make the scan pick up the subtlety instead of the extremeties, I would be a happy husband.

*sigh*

I rub you very very muchly. sweet dreams darling!

I dont think it is possible to roast your work Minimaid. You are truly my favorite artist here , you already know i absolutely love your work! Im not a 'butt licker' [emoticon] (i don't know if that's a good expression in english), when i see things that can be improve in a drawing i say it. But i can't see anything wrong in yours...even if it were...for me it would be part of the drawing n itself.
I love this! Her face is so calm and serene, the choise of color, the delicate shading evrywhere...and all the details. Great great work Robin. [emoticon] A fav...no doubt!

There are ALWAYS improvement to make, no matter how lovely the artwork, my friend. On works like this I will always choose "Roast Me" because even if I can't fix it in this particular drawing, I can keep the advice with me for future endeavours. People like BogusRed are full of good advice that I might not benefit from otherwise! [emoticon]

You are so very very kind to me, every time you comment. And no, I don't think you're a bum-licker (In English, we usually say butt-kisser, instead of licker, so they are very similar expressions.) You can't be a butt0kisser, because youo've never gained much but thanks for all your hard praise. [emoticon] Thanks again for all your encouragement, lilimayhem!

Ah, i knew that wasn't the good expression, in french its 'licheux de bottes'... [emoticon]
i agree there is always some improvement to do on a drawing, but me, when all i see is 'beauty'( i know beauty has nothing do to with art but still, i cant help it), i can't point out any mistakes or advice i could give. You know, even if a drawing had bad proportion but totally blast me away by it's sheer loveliness or anything that caught my enthusiasm, i would rant and rave about how i love it... [emoticon]

No problem Minimaid, i think you deserve all the praise i've been giving you! [emoticon]

absolutely beautiful Robin, you did an excellent job on the tone and the shadows. The muted colors are also wonderful. I must say that in my absence that everyone here, especialy you, have improved. I feel sort of left behind now but it gives me something to strive for. Again just beautiful work my friend.

LLOYD! *glomp*

I'm glad you think I've improved, luv. I've been working hard at doing so ever since your Roth picture. We've all missed you so very much... It's good to see you again.

And you haven't been left behind. I consider myself just trying to catch up to you, still. Your attentions to detail still far exceed my own.

You could try desaturating it a little, or playing with the levels, cutting out the lighter tones more. I'm holding back suggesting a smart blur though- that would smooth out the colours, but you'll lose your pencil stokes [emoticon] I donno- Its a hard one that... Desaturating it is probably best- the scanner picks up on any colour and magnifies it. if you desaturated it, it'll soften the harshness of the tone.

Yes, and I did that already. The problem is that desaturating it even a touch loses the colours almost completely. *sigh* I'm going to try giving it another go after Christmas, methinks, and then I'll send it out to EBS. I really don't like smart blur. Texture is a pretty important thing to keep for me. But yeah - I've already played with the levels to the best of their advantage... Though come to think of it, I didn't try desaturating AFTER playing with the levels, only the other way around. It's worth another try. Thanks, soosie.

PS - Would you be upset if you had to wait until after Christmas for your commission? I have so very many presents to finish, and I'm having trouble finding time for all of them. [emoticon]

Not toooooo upset. I don't wanna rush you [emoticon] I'd rather wait a little while and get something great than rush you and give you a breakdown, and not get anything at all ^^;

I think desaturating it a little now you've done the levels would do it- I did the same thing, and desaturating it gave it back the washed look again (it was a pencil drawing of my character Bryan- the yellow in his hair went too bright and BAD).

It WORKED!

And please don'te worry. I haven't at all forgotten about you. I managed to finish one commission just tonight, but it isn't as detailed as yours will be, and I did it on the puter. (I'll be posting it soon methinks. I just want to get the commissioner's approval.) Now I'm really super pressed for time and I have three families to make presents for (I have two Christmases - one with my dad and his new family, and one with my boyfriend and his family and mom and her boyfriend. Lots and lots of presents.)

Anyhow. Point is, I have your piece started, it's just not going to be finished until sometime in January, realistically. Yours is next in line, though, honest-to-goodness. Thanks SO much Arkillian for your patience. I feel awful making you wait like this.

*huggles back* Oh good... I feel much much better now. There's you and one other girl waiting on me now. I'm not accepting any more commissions until I've taken care of the one's I've got and the prints I want to make so I can send all this stuff out... *sigh* So much to do in such a short life.

Thanks again, luv. I'll talk to ya later, righto?
