McCain's Banana

Its been FOREVER since I've had the time to draw!  School and work have been draining all of my free time away from me , but I'm out of school for a few months now. HORAY! Temporary freedom! haha

This is a political cartoon I did after hearing a few comments from John McCain, Republican Senator from AZ.  The McCain-Kennedy Bill passed the Senate May 25, 2006.  It would let illegal aliens who have lived in the U.S. for more than 5 years apply for citizenship after paying a $3,500 fine, allow illegal aliens here 2-5 yrs apply for citizenship after returning to their home country, and require illegal aliens in the U.S. less than 2 yrs to go home.

First of all it is my contention that ANY legislation that allows people who immigrated to this country illegally ANY type of path to citizenship is in fact AMNESTY and is a slap in the face to LEGAL immigrants who have enough respect for the USA to obey our laws. Second of all, the McCain-McCain bill makes absolutely no philosophical sense, as it will give the most reward to those who have been breaking the law for a greater time period.  Third, there is no guarantee that this law will be enforced as the current immigration laws on the books are NOT being enforced (which is how we got into this mess in the first place thanks to the 1986 amnesty).  Any form of amnesty that becomes law will only encourage more people to illegally immigrate to the U.S. and the problem will never be solved. 

 While addressing those who called his proposal amnesty, McCain told them it was not amnesty and that they could call it a banana if they wanted to. So, I drew a picture of McCain as the Chiquita Banana lady and the result of his ‘banana’ if it were to become law.

Sens. John McCain and Chuck Hagel replied heatedly it was not amnesty.
    

"Let's stop the nonsense," said Hagel, addressing fellow Republicans.

 "You all know it's not amnesty." Said McCain, addressing Vitter, "Call it a banana if you want to ... to call the process that we require under this legislation amnesty frankly distorts the debate and it's an unfair interpretation of it."
