Both Anime's are lossely based on the same chinese legend.

Netiher DBZ or Gensomaden Saiyuki stay very "true" to the legend however Saiyuki stays closer than DBZ did. However I think the original Genjo Sanzo (The Monk) didn't carry a smith and wesson [emoticon]
