Questing Beast 2 WIP

Oh yeah, the painting stage! >o<      *dies*                        The part I have been fearing has come-I don't like painting very much. But it looks ok, except the knights' eyes aren't filled in...and look majorly creepy. O.o

I changed the questing beast a bit, because the old one majorly scared me. I'm not quite sure how to paint his chain mail or his sword-I've never done anything metallic like this.

Hi eegirlee,
You requested a critique from me so here goes. I have to admit though I did not know what a 'questing beast' was until I looked it up on wikipedia. That's why I was confused with trying to figure out what that creature was next to the swordsman.

It's too late at this point to critique the shapes and drawing aspects so I'll try my best to give you some painting tips. You mentioned that you've never painted anything metalic before. The best thing for you to do is get a LOT of reference material. Anytime you take on a painting or drawing that involves drawing/painting something you don't have a lot of experience with its a good idea to get as many photos or paintings to use as reference.

If you tend to have trouble getting detail in painting, I can suggest some tips for that too. I am a very impatient person and learned a few tricks on how to get myself to calm down and get into hard core rendering in acrylic paint.
When you've gotten further on this painting, be sure to post an updated image. I'd like to see the progress.

What would you suggest I use for referance material? Pictures of armor on the internet either appear too dull and pixilated. Should I look for paintings of knights?

Hmm... when you do your image search on Google, do an advanced search and tell it to only search large images.

Also try this site: http://artrenewal.org/
They have a huge database of artwork at high resolutions. I'm sure you could find some artwork with knights in there somewhere.

Also try looking at specific artists like Luis Royo. He's really good at drawing armor.

Oh and try searching for character design artwork of Lord of the Rings or other fantasy based films. Photos would be better than paintings but sometimes you'll have to just go with paintings.
