Frost Dragon Mask

Artists

Artist's Comments

I love blue.  Blue blue blue!  How much more blue could this mask get?  None more blue.

Just a note: I don't use any stamps or molds or forms when I sculpt leather.  This is all done by hand.

Original leather mask, painted with Liquitex acrylics.

Thank you. I make them for people and fun, both. This is what I do for a living...pretty odd profession but at least I get to keep my own hours.

Danke! It's pretty darn big...flattened out the mask is over 18 inches wide & about 2 feet tall (because of those horns). Of course when it's shaped, it kind of wraps around your face & goes back along the sides, so it's not as intrusive to wear.

That's just gorgeous. I love the curls that make the horns and the overall delicate details. Beautiful

Thank you. :-) I was way into the details on this mask...I wanted to challenge myself & make a dragon as spectacular as I possibly could. It was a load of fun.

How long does it take to make something like that?

That particular mask took about 8 hours to make. It's one of the more time-consuming pieces I do. I've had a lot of practice though...when I first started about 15 years ago, even a simple mask would take a day to make.

What sort of people buy them and what do they use them for? Decorative or are they worn? Is Mardi Gras a big time for you?

Can you tell I've never met anyone who professionally made masks?

Well...at most of the shows I do & in most of the galleries, the masks are bought by people who are just into decorating with them. Or they collect them. SOME shows & galleries (like the one I just got into in New Orleans) do promote them as wearable art.

I design almost all my masks to be wearable. I like people to use them & have fun with them.

Cirque Du Soleil bought one of my designs specifically because I DO make them as wearable art. So I guess it's good to keep that option open.

There aren't too many of us maskmakers out there...we're modern-day anachronisms. Gotta say though, I love what I do for a living. [emoticon]

Yeah, it seems like an art that is both necessary and somewhat never seen. Sort of like, hand blown glass. A throw back to the past.

I suppose if I were to ever request one, I'd have to go with a phoenix of some sort.

I've actually done a phoenix mask. [emoticon] I'll post it when I get back from my trip.

Ooooo, very nicely done! I love dragons, and I love masks, and this is just plain awesome. I love the scales, and the sapphire (sp?) blue.

Thanks! It was a ton of fun to make. Usually I make my masks from one solid piece of leather, but the layering I did on this one was SO much fun that I did a few more in the same theme.

You're welcome ^^ Having fun is the most important thing to art I believe, and makes the finished product even more lovely ^^
