Medusa is one of my most tedious, time-consuming masks to make. Don't get me wrong, I love making her...she just takes forever. Every one of those tiny snake heads has to be shaped by hand, and then I sew little 4mm beads into them for eyes. For this one I used malachite stone beads, 'cause I thought the green would look pretty with gold & copper. That's a LOT of tiny little beads.
I was SO bummed when I sold this mask. Usually I'm just fine with selling my work,(I'd be out of business pretty quick if I wasn't), but this one turned out so pretty, I almost wanted to keep it for myself.
Medusa is made out of a single piece of sculpted leather, and colored with a combination of alcohol-based dyes and Liquitex acrylic paints.

merimask (Reply)Total Posts: 80Jul 28, 2007 11:12 pmIt's made of leather, but my last step is to seal the whole mask with a clear acrylic coat. Makes them pretty indestructable & you can wipe them clean with soap & water if you need to...I use baby wipes on them when they get dusty. |
