Paper Demon 8

Artists

Artist's Comments

The eight PaperDemon in my PaperDemon series. Haven't done one in a while. Anyway I used this for the latest site design. I think the parts I like most are the colors for the hair and skin and some of the subtle color changes in the green and white parts of his clothing. I hate the boots though but, what can you do. I have a Red Curtain version of this drawing that I still need to color. He will be used for the new Red Curtain design when it debuts.

The drawing was done on paper and scanned in. I painted it in Photoshop, except for the background. The background I did in Painter. Meh.. the background is ok but nothing special.

Lately, I haven't really wanted any constructive criticism on my art. You may have noticed that I've been choosing the Comfort Food option for crits. I've been going through a rough time at school and right now I do my art for myself and no one else. My confidence in my abilities as an artist have been drained by school and I'd just like to just draw the way I want to without worrying whether it looks good or not. I just want to enjoy drawing and painting and not be critical of myself. [emoticon]

We all need some time to express ourselves how we please, so nobody can fault you. Plus, you're an amazing artist and it's always fun to look at your art.
As for this piece...like your others, I love the mood you're able to create by your use of colors and brush strokes. I still don't know how you use Photoshop as you do, I finally put it on my computer and am no where CLOSE to this kind of quality. [emoticon] But, I know I can always come back to one of your works and figure out where I'm going.
Excellent, Susie.

Thanks for the comments Heidi. As for the photoshop stuff, the technique I used here is completely different from the one explained in my tutorial. With this method, you only use a hard brush and you paint by varying the opacity on your brush. The numbers above the letters on your keyboard are quick keys to change the opacity. Like 2 will put it at 20% opacity and 8 will put it at 80% opacity and so on. This is the method my friends use at school and it takes a lot of getting used to.

I dunno why you'd be losing confidence in the artistic sense I think you're absoluting great! Especially with your whimsical, dreamy style. That's something I could never do no matter how hard I try. As for this demon you've pulled together another awesome pic (I say that alot [emoticon] but its true!) and keep doing your thang! [emoticon] Don't let anyone pull you down [emoticon]

I have little self confidence because my classmates are ten times better than me. I'm nothing compared to many of them. I'm in the middle. I'm always afraid the teacher is going to think I'm a slacker because the work I have isn't up to par with the good half of the class. But it isn't that. I know I'm not a slacker, I just don't know how to go about doing the assignments. I'm not receiving the detailed instruction I used to get in the earlier classes with the better teachers. This teacher just gives you the assingment and expects you to figure it out. It's a sink or swim situation. [emoticon]

I kinda know how you feel with artists you feel are better. I always encounter people who are ten times better than me but it makes just try even harder to be better than them. I guess what I'm saying is get inspiration from them if you know you can do better than strive that much harder for it...wow I sound like a cheesy rags to riches movie [emoticon] But you are a wonderful artist and your teacher doesn't answer questions or nothing? He doesn't even give you a brief explanation of your assignment? Seems to me if he doesn't he really shouldn't be teaching cause he's not exactly teaching anything he's just handing out assignments left and right.

thanks. the teacher answers questions but he doesn't show us how to do the assignment. he tells us what he wants just not how to do it. i mean that's what we are there for, to learn how to do it. To learn how to design environments.
As for encountering good artists, if I encounter them like on the internet like find them here or on DA, it's inspiring. But it's somehow different in school. It just makes me feel worthless and lazy like I'm not trying hard enough because we are taking the same classes and they are doing better than me.

I've had teachers like that and yeah it is really frustrating to get something done that you don't know how to do. There's no other teacher that teaches that same subject that maybe you could switch to? That might help you out if there is but then I'm thinking of high school stuff and college is most likely very very different. And you can't be lazy or worthless if you've kept up PD and ZMT for so long with success. You have alot of things to deal with and doing school at the same time is admirable just have faith in yourself and continue to do your very best. [emoticon]

Yeah you are right. PD and ZMT are something to be proud about. Unfortunately, there are no other teachers or sessions for these classes because we don't have enough students to open up more than one section of the class. What I've decided to do is finish up school as soon as possible and just get the BA degree instead of the BFA and then get certified training in web programming. I just want to be done at this school as soon as possible.

I like the earthy colors and the light green, they make the picture so atmospheric. Very well done. And the floating hair is just beautiful.

So I have one question, have you painted this with the mouse, or do you have some kind of tablet? I ask that, because I toy with the idea to buy a tablet (not only for painting).

Thank you for the comments.

The line work was done with paper and pencil. The coloring was done with a Wacom Graphire tablet. I just bought a Wacom Intuos tablet a couple days ago and it is really awesome. If you have the money, I'd go with the Wacom Intuos.

don't get a tablet brand other than Wacom. Wacom is the best and has built in functionality with photoshop and painter. actually when I bought my intuos it came with coupons for buying painter and photoshop. if you are a student, you can buy all of your software and your pen tablet too at creationengine.com or academicsuperstore.com

Thanks for your answer. Right now, my brand new Wacom Intuos tablet is lying beside me on the table. Also other people have recommended it. I wanted one for a long time, and now I’m very happy and I’m testing all I can do with it. But now my hand is hurting and I must take a break. (Unfortunately my hands and wrists are very sensitive and always start to hurts too easy and fast, same when I'm working to long with the mouse).

My first picture I will do with the help of the tablet, I will show on this site, but I think it will take me some time.

Wow, he's really beautiful! I love your sketchy coloring style. His hair looks great too, I just love the way you draw your characters' hair. [emoticon]
The way you integrated him in the site design is way original. I know how you feel about others being better than you. I'm sure that if I'd go to study art I'd feel the same thing. Not that I don't feel that already. That's just the way it is since I mostly teach myself. [emoticon] Anyhow, I love it. And screw them, you're a great artist!*huggles* [emoticon] Sorry.
