Mechanical pencils all the way!
but i use 0.7mm or 0.9mm
I get excellent shadows out of them.

Oh yes, I love the amount of control the mechanicals allow. I think I might add the 0.7 to the mix if I keep drawing people who wear black. It takes forever to get even with the 0.5 lol
