Commissions, cheap!

Feb 9, 2008 11:07 am by megan1832

This is basically to give folks a rundown on how I work for writing commissions, as well as a lot of the questions I often get concerning commissions in general.

So...why writing commissions?

Well, for the most part, I can't draw to save my life and even if I could, I wouldn't be comfortable selling it to people. Writing to me comes a lot more naturally as a method of expression, and I enjoy playing with characters and their settings more than I do drawing them out. Yes, I realize it's a little unorthodox, but what the hey, anything's worth a shot, right?

How do you price?

For the most part I try to judge by how many thousands of words there are rather than pages, since for me that's easier to keep tabs on. In addition to that, different sorts of pages can be measured by different means. At the moment I've been charging about $5 USD for 1,000 words, but depending on responses from people and the time I have to get them done, the price might be subject to change.

Are you open right now?

Selectively. I have a couple people waiting on their commissions right now and some of my own projects to do, so my time's limited between that and a part time job. If you're interested anyway, please note me.

Do you need anything from me before you start a commission?

Most of the time, I ask people for a rough outline of what they want to see in their plot, unless they'd like to wait the rest of their natural lives for me to come up with something on my own. Trust me, the more you provide to me about your setting, characters, and plot, the faster and easier I can get things done.

So what happens if I want more writing done or I want something really edited?

Usually when I do commissions I work with the person who's asked me for them as closely as possible to make sure the story is going in the direction they'd like it to. However, if you'd like to have more added to your story or would like parts heavily edited, I'll likely ask you for more money to do it. Would you ask an artist to erase half their work for free after they've colored it all in? Probably not, and the same deal applies here.

What kind of payments do you take?

Paypal, but barring that I can take personal check or money order, but the check needs to clear before I can start.

Have you done work for other people before?

Yes, please check my commissions folder in my gallery here.

What sort of content do you do?

Any sort, fantasy and horror being favorites of mine. I am however open to doing other genres so long as it's PG-13 and can be put here, since I'd like to build a portfolio of sorts for the future.

I have another question and you haven't answered it here.
