I've been thinking a lot here and there about what to do with Surviving Together. This has been such a slow moving project, partly because of the business of school, and because of lack of knowledge on my part on how to start right. I haven't even started refining my storyboards yet. It's still in the same stage it was in last year. Spring break is coming up and I may have some time to finally get around to this.
I've decided to take Surviving Together in a slightly different direction. Actually, I kind of always knew I would take it in this direction but I never knew what it was called. A friend of mine mentioned that there are two types of animation out there. There's animation, and then there is "illustrated radio." I think that will work perfectly for Surviving Together. It will be more like a moving illustration. Most of it will be simple animation. Scooby Doo is an example of illustrated radio but don't expect Surviving Together to look anything like that. I really want ST to have a cinematic feel to it. I want the camera angles and colors and values to really tell the story as well as the dialogue.
I'm wondering what I should do about the voicing. Most of it is so terrible that I'm thinking of recasting it, finding people from the drama department. I don't think Zarbon will change but something needs to be done about Vegeta. Since Daniel (Vegeta) is off in the military, he's not available for voicing. Neither is Annica (Bulma). These voices are so critical that I don't want them to not be perfect. But do I cut out my friends? Annica worked so hard to record all of her lines for the whole story and now we are realizing we didn't do a good job with the acting. I like Annica's voice, she's got the right personality for the character, it's just that the acting is bad. The acting was bad for all the characters. Maya (Zarra) I definately don't want to change. She's perfect for that part. Nappa is great too but I think we went a little too far with the Redneck stuff.
The question still remains what to do with Vegeta and Bulma. I'm leaning towards recasting but I don't have an incentive to the voice actors. I'm not paying anyone for their time. I guess the only thing I can offer is experience.
Ugh! THis is sooo frustrating. Maybe I should just go back to the second Vegeta, Michael (The one in the teaser). He was a better actor and he's the most available.
I know for sure that one thing I will do differently when recording this time will be to have Bulma and Vegeta in the same room recording together to build chemistry.
Alright enough rambling. Back to homework.
