Worst hospital experience:
I was about 7 years old. For more days than I can count I had been enduring horrible stomach/abdominal pains. I couldn't eat - could barely sleep. I had a fever, body aches. It was terrible. My Mom took me to the ER. They sent me home with: GAS!
The pain got so bad I couldn't stand - or move very much at all. Fed up, my mother took me back to the ER that same day. Different shift....different doctors. I was examined. Turns out I had a perforated appendix. I needed surgery YESTERDAY. If I'd stayed at home for much longer I'd have died of sepsis. What a bunch of jerks. The first set of doctors hadn't bothered to do a few more tests - so they had sent me home to die. My mother was seriously PO'ed!!
Stand back...I'm about to do science!

Ha! Well I could share a number of stories, but they'd be a little different from the rest of yours because I work in a hospital. My stories would involve what patients did to make my night hard. But since I'd likely be sued and lose my liscense, I can't tell you. I'll just say that frequently I'm called a number of names when I try to help patients. No really, people sometimes will call you names as you are administering pain medication or doing everything you possibly can to make them comfortable. I understand that they're suffering, but I'm trying to help. There there's the people that like to punch, kick, or choke you for no reason. (Seriously it happens more then you'd think)
A brief word about IV's since a couple of people have commented on them. I feel your pain, really I do. I have let countless nursing students practice on me with 18 guage needles or larger (for those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, that's a really big needle and hurts like you know what). I just want to say that starting IV's can be really, really hard. Veins really like to play hide and seek, especially if the patient is dehydrated. Unfortunately sometimes its necessary to dig a bit to get into the vein. I know this hurts really bad, but if there was a better way, none of us know about it. Please be as nice as possible because it can be incredibly nerve racking to do it and the more upset you get, the more your veins constrict and the more difficult it is (seriously, physiologically that's what happens). I've acually had someone scape bone trying to put in an IV (believe me it hurt) so I guess I understand it from both angles since I put in IV's too. I know when you feel like crap, the last thing you want is someone to repeatedly stick needles in your arm. Unfortunately not everyone has veins in the same place, so you can't simply pick a neutral spot and go for it. Veins also like to sabotage you by being full of valves or pushing the catheter out or...well I could go on for awhile about this...
About the perforated appendix, I can't see an excuse for that and I am so sorry that happened to you. I am so glad that you went back and got some competent care.
So anywho, be nice to us humble medical workers. Most of us (I know there are a few bad apples in the bunch) don't want to hurt you and really only want to help. Well that's my platform and lecture for the day. Sorry I get a bit over-defensive. Its just I love my job and I love helping people.

ouch, that's gotta suck...and don't worry emmet, i was a joker when i came in...granted i can't remember half of what happened and apparently i starts singing i'm so pretty song before passing out...haha, yeh it was great, all the doctors i saw said the same thing..."wow, you look miserable..." heh...fun...they don't even know what i had, it was a random virus that was worse then food poisoning...
I've had 2 hospital experiances myself and they were both great other than my own fear of being there to begin with. They were both for C-sections to get my little heathens out The second was the hardest because no one down here in Texas could keep my older son so my husband had to and I went into the operating room alone but it turned out good the drug doctor lady ( I still cant spell or pronounce it emmet, LOL) was really nice and held my hand and she talked to me when I didn't completely zone out which I guess alot of her patients did. It's still not a place I long to be though. Hospitals give me the heby geebys LOL.
