With our new gallery system we have nifty icons that go with each gallery. For the fan arts, I can easily create icons for those by just grabbing the logo or some official artwork for the fan art, but for the Aesthetic Concept/Genre galleries, it's a little bit trickier so I thought I'd leave it up to the wonderfully talented members here at PD.

Basically all you have to do is create a 150 x150 square jpg image that represents a gallery. You can use official artwork or your own artwork (although I prefer if you use your own artwork). The best icons would be ones that are iconic, as in, simple and when you see it you know what it is trying to convey even at a small size.

Prize
What's the prize? Well, your prize is that your icon will be displayed when someone visits the gallery! Also your name will be credited in the description of the gallery as the author of the icon (along with a link to your profile page). Sorry that I can't offer anything better than that as a reward.

Submission Instructions
To submit your icon, post your icon in your image folio (or some place like photobucket) and post a link to it in this forum thread. Please also post a link in your forum post that goes to the gallery for which this icon was designed for.

Which galleries can I create an icon for?
You can create an icon for any gallery that doesn't already have an icon. If a gallery doesn't have an icon, it will display this default icon:

Just visit the art gallery and use the side bar for a list of icons. By the way, the same icon will be used in the Red Curtain Art section and the new Writing Libraries if that gallery exists in those sections.

If you find a gallery that already has an icon but you think the icon sucks balls, feel free to create a new one and submit it.

End Date
The contest will end September 8th
However, since new galleries are created all the time we will always have a need for new icons so this is sort of like a never ending contest. But by having at least an initial end date, I get to see every one's submissions and decide on the best since there may be multiple submissions for each gallery.

Who decides who wins?
I, BogusRed, will decide which icon works best. If you are the only one that submits an icon for a particular gallery, that doesn't mean you win by default. I will only use icons that I think look good and accurately represent the gallery.

Oh, gosh... I really want to enter this... but... I have a hard time coming up with pictures that generalize an entire genre of art...

Just to be ultra clear... you'd like to have pictures that capture the essence of these genres; Abstract, Angst, Animals, Anthropomorphic, Biseinen, Bishoujo, Bishounen, Cartoons, Chibis, Costume Design, Creatures, Desktop Wallpaper, Fantasy, General, Gothic, Humor, Macabre, Mecha, Oekaki, Pixel Art, Realism, Romance, Sci-Fi, Shoujo-Ai, Shounen-Ai, Still Life... right?

Sorry for my stupidity. [emoticon]

Yes those are the correct galleries. But you don't have to do them all. You can just do one or two or a few or however many ones you want.

I think on the fma gallery you should've used a transmutation circle rather than a the logo. Transmutation cirlces are much easier to recognize and won't look all smushed up if you reduce it to 150x150, like the logo is. But it's whatever floats your boat.

See that's the thing. i'm unfamiliar with many of these series so if you want, you can create a new icon that you think is more relavant to the series and then submit it to me.

ah, of course. I think I have just the one..... side note, it's whatever. It just seems more  recognizable when there's a transmutation circle. Not many people see the japanese logo and recognize it off the bat.

probably. It's such an easy contest really. I'm sorry that this wasn't that big of a contest. I do have ideas for a real contest with real prizes.

EDIT:

I could get images from other places, but I don't know how to resize them

Yeah if I knew how to resize them, then I'd get lots of pics for icons for...anything!

Ok, guys.  Resizing is a skill EVERY posting artist needs.

If you have a program that opens pictures, such as photoshop or the GIMP or Irfanview:

In Photoshop, at the main bar, there is the file, edit, image, and so forth drop menus.  Click on Image, and go to "Image size", then specify exactly what size you want.  You can set it to read inches, centimeters, pixels, etc.

For our purposes, however, what you need to do is create a new file with a size of 150 by 150 pixels.  Open the picture you want for the thumbnail, and use [emoticon] to drag it into your 150 by 150 new image frame.  Make your window space bigger (click and drag the corner of the window), zoom WAY out, and hit ctrl-T.  hold shift down while you click the corner of the bounding box and drag it to make your image fit inside your 150 by 150 canvas frame.  Then voila!  Flatten the image, and you have a thumbnail.

But for just resizing an image, mostly it's just finding the command under the toolbar - whether it be image or edit, or even the stretch/skew option in MS Paint.

If you go to the tutorials section in www.elfwood.com, I'm pretty sure there's some information there on resizing.  I recommend that everyone learn how to resize and crop their images A.S.A.P.  These are very important skills to have in the internet-posting world.

Under the same part, the image drop-menu, there is another option called 'attributes'.  You can check the pixel sizing there.

I suggest you download the GIMP 2.2, though.  It's a free program that works much like photoshop.  With it, you'd be able to do a lot more of the basic things needed.  Just look up GIMP 2.2 on google and find a good site to download it from.
