There's an interesting movie coming out later this year called The Golden Compass. I've only seen one preview and I'm intrigued. (It seems to have a refreshing/new storyline). I ador fantasy movies and this wonderful resurgance of fantasy on the big screen is wonderful. But not every film can have 'Lord of the Rings' quality. I was wondering what everybody else felt about recent fantasy films. The Good, The Bad - The Embaressing. ( Harry Potter - Pan's Labyrinth - Lords of the Rings - Narnia - Eragon, etc.)
What I really want to see are some ORIGINAL made for the screen fantasy stories. I know the books that many of these movies come from are fabulous, but they loose their luster when adapted. THat's why I really enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth (Despite the morbid violence). I guess I'm a sucker for movies that take me back to the fantasy classics I loved as a kid (Labyrinth, Legend, The Dark Crystal not to mention some of the warrior/swordsman flicks like Conan the Barbarian ( one of the bettert adapted tales based on a novel), Willow and The Beastmaster. I love that black tiger! (I know it was dyed, :lol
I also happen to like Sword and the Sorcerer and Krull. Alll of these movies paved the way for my writing and art.
While I can see the marketability of having young characters as leads I'm getting tired of the main characters being young kids. I'm getting older and I would like to see more people my age go on fantasical journeys, that's all...
Or course, that doesn't stop be from enjoying a good story. So I guess I can't complain too much about that.
The Golden Compass seems promising ; Check out the web site.
