Fantasy... medieval.... these are just two popular genres in story/ art. It's a very romantic genre, but I'v started wondering since a news article on TV (5 minutes of TV- that is ALOT for me!!) about an old 80 year old man cleaning up the litter in his local area, being an unsung hero.
He mentioned something interesting about how we've nearly depleted the world of liquid energy (and at this rate we'll destroy it yadiyah depressing), and it got me thinking.
I LOVE medieval fantasy, as many of you would know. I write and draw it, but could I live it?
If we ran out of liquid gas RIGHT NOW- what would you do? Could you survive without power? Without batteries? without lightbulbs? Heaters? Airplanes? Cars? INTERNET?
Tell me your thoughts on this please.
How would you handle being in the dark ages? Remembering that when I say dark ages, it'd be more modernised (due to a developed way of thinking), so more like 1800s rather than 1500s.
Do remember, we may come across alternative power sorce- such as wind as alot of countries have, and water like NZ lives off, but I'm thinking crisis here- no liquid gas would TRUNCATE the industry over years, and it'd eventually turn out like the 1800s cause things will be too expensive to make.

I think the guy was exagerating about our consumption but I'll answer the question anyway...
I think I could do it but I'd be pretty depressed for the first couple months. So much of my life revolves around things that I do on the computer. But perhaps it would rekindle my love for drawing. I'd still be able to draw which would keep me satisfied.
Hope you are enjoying PaperDemon.com. Let me know if there's anything I can do to improve your PD experience

It would probably suck for a while, being without the internet and such, but I went without tv for about half a year, so I could adjust to being without a computer and technology also. I live right by a forest so I know a bit about living in dark times

Absolutely. I'd be a bounty hunter. Plenty of adventure and tons of stuff that I could have done then but can't now. I am a very adventurous person, but unfortunately, there isn't much adventure to be had in this world of ours.
If you stand still, nothing will happen. But, if you take even a step forward, I have a feeling something will change. And, something good will happen!

I like your style. Go full on stalker styles- may the best win XD Live off the 'fat of the land' is probably how I'd do it XD That, or candle light styles. It would suck not being able to talk to all my northern hemisphere friends I have now
Earth is so much more educated nowdays though- if we ever went to the 'dark ages' again, it would be totally different cause we'd know how to take care of things and do stuff efficently. They didnt' have that in those days- we're kinda lucky that way.

So are we talking Medieval Europe? Since I'm not Anglo/Caucasian I would not be enjoying myself. Can I be in Medieval Africa...preferabley northern Africa?
And I'm not quite sure what you mean by Medieval being more modernized...1800s? That 's the Victorian era also the begining of the Industrial Revolution. Two totally different worlds.
Medieval fantasy? That's a little different. I certainly could be some traveling Moor or something of that nature. That's what I dress as when I'm at the Renissance Faire.

I'd totally survive in the Dark Ages. We're talking 700-900 AD, not the 1500s. The 1500s was the Renaissance. In the Dark Ages, there were vikings. I'd go on raids all day long. It would be even more adventure than I have now. I live in the mountains and shoot animals that come too close with my bow and arrows.
I'm also a member of the SCA (sca.org), which is an orgnazation that attempts to recreate Medievel Europe, even more authentically so than the Renaissance Faires.
The only thing that would suck about the Dark Ages is disease, but that would only be a problem in the congested cities. Since I'd live alone in the wood mostly, I probbaly wouldn't have to deal with it.
But when I was in high school, my friend and I got so fed up with American society - all the electronics, worshipping of glamour and liesure, seeing adult men in football jerseys pretending to be actual athletes - we were going to load up a van full of camping and hunting equipment and just retreat into the wood and the mountains, living off the land and whatnot. But my friend chickened out in the end and it never happened.
But yeah, I've dreamed of living in the Dark/ Middle Ages for almost all my life.

I'm not really meaning old dark ages, but a modern day version of it with no power or technology. Obviously, Runic wouldn't have an issue ^^ I may not myself- I'd miss the technology for a while, then get on with stuff as normal (While missing the extra company). As a Scout though, we frequently go out to the middle of nowhere and survive without technology. In saying this- losing ALL gas is a little different, cause they did use it. IT's hard to say how dark it would be in modern days.
Silver bane- not medieval fantasy- I'm a fan of it, but if modern days became like it with no power

Okay - I thought about it. I'd be a time traveler and I'd show up with topical antibiotics, aspirin, penicillin and those water purification tabs the military use so I don't get Typhoid or Dysentery. LOL! Oh and feminine hygiene products. A leather strap/belt and some cotton will not do it.
I suppose that's why I go for full on fantasy with a mingling of ancient knowledge and modern day concepts like sanitation, hygiene and what not. This is a fun topic Ark - has me thinking what level of technology I plan to incorporate in to my own fantasy stories. Hmmmm....

Umm living in the mideval era?
Um no i think i would be kidnapped by an evil witch or something of that sort, I dont think i would make it passed 20 or something.
LoL
I am no good for outdoors, eventhough i live in a country that is more wilderness than cities and all, I grew up in the states, and i have always lived in the capital-urbanized cities in Panama (thats where i am from)
So no I dont think i would make it far. That is if I could get mated to somekind of beautiful bishou youkai or demon, then we would be talking 'bout somethin'!
;-)

Funny you should ask that. I've lived, briefly, in the Middle East, and in many places there they're still in the Dark Ages. Had I been born in the DA, I would have handled it as well as any other person. If I were transplanted there now... yeah, I could make it work. But I'd cheat by using my knowledge of chemistry, biology, pharmacology, engineering and other skills to make myself invaluable to whatever noble lord I could. And all I'd want in return is a shank of meat and few saucy wenches now and then.

I don’t think I would have that much problems living in the Victorian era, a lot would depends upon what class I was born in (obviously it would be a lot harder to survive if you were extremely poor) but for the basics I’ll assume you mean middleclass. I don’t think I would find that too hard; my only problem would be about the whole women rights thing. A plus for me would be that you’re referring to my favorite fashion era.
Q. How long is a piece of string?
A. Twice the length from the center to one end.
