I don't remember them having the chinese zodiac. I think it was planets only.

The planets have symbols which are the same as zodiac ones, but they don't go through the years- just the planets. The Sailor scout are all associated to planets. Even Tuxedo mask is associated with Earth. Kind of poetic consideritythat Serina is Sailor MOON.

There's also Sailor Stars too- they're cool ^^ The extended solar system Sailors are more powerful too.

I thought as much. I just thought they might have animal signs that match their personalities and skills. All I need to know is that what years they were born but according to some fans the scouts are somewhere between 14-16. Darien is in his 20s and Rini is some where between 6-8.

Sounds a bit too in depth for the 80s audiance ^^ I think a theme with pretty girls was all they were lookng for. space was a very good theme for mystery and beauty. Going in depth to the chinese zodiacs as well is something an adult aimed anime/manga would do

Fruits Basket was aimed at probably the same age level as Sailor Moon, and it was all about the Chinese zodiac.

What I meant was to be aimed primarily at the planets with lots of hints of a zodiac was a little OTT for a youth storyline. Sailor Moon was all about the mystery and romance of space. I don't think it was ever meant to be any more in depth than that. It was all about female empowerment, pretty girls and the undying romance. You can hear it in the Japanese lyrics to the theme song "Miracle Romance" They called it.
