Ok so I try to avoid posting personal stuff on the PD news section but I have a good reason, I swear!
I'm engaged to be married!
Yep! Mike, aka Exdeath, proposed to me a couple weeks ago (finally). We've been dating for over 6 years now. Now I have to plan the wedding. OH my goodness. I don't even know how to walk in heels. I'm a tom boy who's just barely starting to get in touch with her domestic side. How am I going to plan a WEDDING!?
So I'm already having a hard time dealing with work, cooking, much less maintaining PaperDemon. Now I need to plan a wedding... I'm going to need your support here folks. I haven't been as active on PD in the past year as I used to be. And it's possible that wedding planning will get into my PD time, but I hope it doesn't.
Also I'm even crazy enough to think I might sew my own wedding dress. OMG I am crazy.
And if any of you have experience in planning a wedding, I could really use the advice. After looking at how much one of these things is going to cost, I'm thinking maybe we should just run away to Vegas... or better yet.. just go to city hall and sign a few papers!

As for advice- remember it's YOUR wedding. Don't let the ideas people have about weddings, about what they should be, dictate what yours ends up. Make sure you're comfortable and happy. Like the heels? Screw 'em. Don't wear them because you think you should, wear nice flats or hell flipflops or sneakers if you like. Only make it as big as you're comfortable with (and afford). Play the music you like at your reception, eat the food you like and make sure to get help from your friends where you can.
And most of all, remember to step away from the stress sometimes and take a deep breath to relax.
Also, congratulations.

Friendship is like peeing on yourself: everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling that it brings.

As long as YOU'RE happy with your wedding, that's all that matters. My wedding (outside the standard filing fees and crap for the courthouse) cost me and my husband the $50 we gave his pastor. My dress was a dress I'd owned for years but that I loved to death - the only reason I don't wear it anymore is because I outgrew (got too fat for) it.
My parents picked up the cost of the cake (made by a local gal) and the catering (sandwich trays) which cost them a total of $75. My in-laws got us a honeymoon suite at the local Super 8 for the night ($88). Two of our friends treated us to dinner at Red Lobster after the reception (which was probably the spendiest part of the evening, considering all of us except our driver were drunk enough that they were ready to kick us out by the time we left). And yet, despite how little we spent on it, my wedding day/night is still one of the most memorable nights I have from the five years of marriage and four years prior to being married that my husband and I have been together.
TIP: If your soon-to-be hubby is not able to pick you up without great difficulty, don't let him try.
My hubby is a wuss, but wanted to do the whole "carrying the bride over the threshold" thing, and not only ended up dropping me before he got to the bed, but nearly banged my head into the door frame - the only reason he didn't was that I saw it coming and leaned out of the way in time.
Most of all, remember that the day is about you and your other half, not all of the people around you. Your plans and your arrangements should focus on your wants and needs.

Thank you everyone! I'm loving all of the advice. I like the idea of wearing flip-flops for shoes! Or maybe I'll wear sneakers hahah. I've heard of brides doing that before.

Whooo Hoo! Congratz and Mazel Tov! You two do whatever makes you happy - skip down the aisle barefoot, in hot pants, throwing daisies if you want. Best luck and happiness to you both!

Fail. That's not a good ending to a milestone that big ^^; I hope there was some make up time after that

First, congratulations! I'm so excited for you.
Second, my mother and I did pretty much everything for my wedding so I'd be happy to offer advice or help with really anything I can.
I'd say first off, don't mess with heals if you can't walk in them. I got these beautiful sort of ballet slipper type shoes off the internet. They didn't last very long after the reception but they went perfectly with the gown I had and were so much more comfortable. There was no way I could do heals, I'd break my ankles lol.
We did our own invitations. We got a box of them from the store Michael's, used their monthly sale coupon to get them for less and got the few single pages and envelopes needed since we needed 65 and the box had only 60. Between images publically available on the internet and some inexpensive rubber stamps and ink pads we made the invites, return card and everything for I think over 100 dollars less than the fancy store wanted to charge us.
We went with fake flowers for the bridal party, you so couldn't tell, but that saved us lots because we bought them from a craft store and I had a bouquet I walked with then a much smaller, easier to throw one for the reception.
Argh, you probably don't need to listen to me ramble but I do honestly mean I would like to help with anything I can, even if it's just someone to poke at with questions since I've been there. Doing most of the wedding ourselves saved us over $3000, and that's based on what a lot of the research we did said it would cost above what we spent.
Again, congratulations so much! I wish you all the best! ~DragonAce

Arkillian, he proposed to me while on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland!
Thanks DragonAce, Pazazz, and AmberEyez!
DragonAce, I'd love to hear more. I do intend to do a lot of stuff myself to save some bucks. Plus by doing it myself I get to customize it. I was also thinking that instead of sending snail mail invites, I'd instead do most of it online. Some family members would prefer to do stuff the old fashioned way so I'll send out paper invites for those. But having everything online makes it easier. I plan to make a whole wedding website and stuff.
I like the idea of fake flowers. I don't plan to spend a lot of money on flowers. I intend to make the centerpieces myself as well. Not sure what they'll be yet, but I'm thinking of possibly involving little pirate Lego people. But LEGO.com doesn't sell the pirate.
I also don't want to spend a lot of money on a cake that will taste awful. Maybe I'll do cookies or pie or something. I've got a lot of weird ideas.
I'm also considering making my own wedding dress (no i'm not crazy, i swear!)

First off....
CONGRATULATIONS!
Second... W00t!
Third... I've actually planned two weddings in my lifetime (both my own). It can be done on a budget.
First and Foremost - SET YOUR BUDGET & Set a Date
Know how much you want to spend first.
Decide jointly a type of ceremony you want... religious (domination) or Secular. (My first was Baptist and it was awful, my second was a secular ceremony and it was so much nicer. Short, romantic and meaningful to both of us, you can watch it on YouTube to get an idea what a secular ceremony is.)
These two seconds have the actual ceremony itself so you can hear what our minister wrote for us:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu4HiL4nfLo&feature=PlayList&p=E2DE60BFD0BDAECC&index=4
Under 15 minutes of actual "ceremony" no long winded speeches, no religious dogma, just love, respect and honor.
Our friend Dave was our minister (universalist church) and he wrote that ceremony for us.
Second - Contact - Florist, Cake Baker, Reception Hall, Ceremony Hall (If separate), Photographer and Videographer... NOW. These folks can book up solid over a year in advance, find who you like and get on the reserved list stat.
I will be here 24/7 if you need me to help. Call me to vent if you need to, sometimes just talking person to person alleviates stress. It can get stressful but it does not have to be.
Just take it one step at a time. One hurdle at a time and it will get done just fine.
xoxoxo
Also: It is YOUR wedding.. do whatever makes you BOTH happy. Go Hawaiian in grass skirts and barefoot if you want to,
I wore ballet flats from a bridal shop with my dress, I don't do heels either.
Have FUN, this is your Day and don't let anyone dictate their tastes to you. Take advice with a smile and a grain of salt, but in the end when the decisions need to be made, do what you like most in your heart of hearts.
Hell COSPLAY Vegeta and Bulma even if you want to.
Here's wher I got my Invitations, Reception Favors (Bubbles and Bookmarks) & Wedding Programs ---> CHEAP and they were BEAUTIFUL:

another option if you like the tropics is to get a resort wedding like sandals or a cruiseline. they plan EVERYTHING for you. you just sit down and answer a few questions, then they make magic. my brother went to sandals for his second wedding. he says that a typical wedding and the resort option both cost the same, just less planning for the resort. you will be posting some pictures of the event right? make sure you get lots of angles of your dress, that's the best part!

CONGRATS!!! I see lots of great ideas here, if I was going to plan a wedding I'd definately write all this down. My brother did his second marriage a good way too, his aunt-in-law officiated for him and since it was small they did it in her home. We had a lot of finger foods so snack trays would be a great help - especially since they don't cost much and are already made. Since we own a mini-dvd camcorder, I taped the ceremony for him and then made his wedding dvd (did a fancy one too with what came with my program). We had also did the pictures and video for my cousin's wedding so if you have anyone in the family who likes to do those things and does a good job I'd ask them to do it for you. It'll make them feel great and you'll get something with lots of personal touches and love in it.
I do have a suggestion too, make a list of things that you could use around the house and ask people to buy those as wedding gifts. Or even gift cards to places you know you'll go to, my brother was remodeling his house when he got married and we got him a gift card to Lowe's - he loved it and we knew it was something he needed. Others gave him a couple gift cards to resturants they liked to eat at.
You know, all this thinking of weddings makes me really want to do a set of Bride and Groom Mini plushies. If you want them, PM me with you and your soon to be hubbie's hair and eye color (and address later on) and I'll give them to you as a wedding gift. - sometimes I just get a really wild hair and do things just because I like an idea
. It shouldn't take more than a week to finish them and all I'll ask is that you treasure them and maybe put them on your cake or gift table

I'm sorry to say that I don't have any good advice on the wedding planning though, haha. But I'm sure it'll play out nicely in the end. :3

Friends of mine did the whole wedding invite thing with e-vites and a blog. I'll send you the link privately so you can take a look - very sweet !
How about a big tier of cupcakes for the cake(s)? easy to do, transport, stack, etc.
Enjoyenjoy - and you could make little lego-style pirates out of cake, like petits-fours... squares & rectangles, then just paint.
