The Hall of Shame

This is standard on many community based websites. It's a record of the members who have been banned, why they were banned, and how to contact them. I started this post today (August 12, 2005) because I had to ban a member today. And what's sad about this member is that she was on the site for several months posting what I believe to be her own stories. Then, today she decided to post artwork that wasn't hers and claim it as her own. It breaks my heart to see someone do this. What's the point I ask you? Anyway, this is the Hall of Shame...

This user created a second account (Axel x Sora) and then plagiarized various Naruto, Final Fantasy, and Kingdom Hearts artwork with that account.
Her parents oddly enough were also members here. They got so upset that their daughter had been banned that they asked to be banned too. Their usernames are gatorchas and LarknessWitchCraft. The mother went around spamming the site with the same message. Remnants of her spamming were left up for amusement:

Took various pornographic photos from the internet and ran photoshop filters on them trying to pass them as drawings/paintings. Somehow he thought his ten seconds of work can get by my 10 years of photoshop experience.

 

These people NEVER learn. It boogles my mind, I mean you're getting PRAISE for something you DIDN'T DO, and you are squeeing and thanking people.

It's gotta be a brain malfunction, I sometimes think they actually BELIEVE they deserve the praise.

I've had so many people plagiarise me (Fiction and Art)

I've had them upload my whole webpage (including the html formatting) to Fanfic.net and just change the author name.

I've had them airbrush or crop out my signature on images and repost...

I know usually within 24 hours when I log in and I see my e-mail has EXPLODED with reports of the theft to me.

HOW people think they can steal ANYTHING, especially well saturated/high view fanart/fanfic is almost laughable.

It would be like me coming here and taking Bogus' art and sticking my name on it. Everyone here has already SEEN IT and KNOWS it's hers.

I had a really HIGH profile in GW fandom for years. So it was the same there, I had my name and work out there, it was recognizable by the fandom at large.

So when people go to ff.net or mediaminor with my stuff, even NOW after I've left active fandom... I get theft e-mails at least once every 3-6 months.

People can be so stupid sometimes.

Well, I knew a girl who used to steal art. She got kicked off Otaku. I thought something was odd that her style seemed to change with the direction of the wind, but I figured that she was nice and wouldn't hurt someone like that. *sigh* I guess you just never can tell.

I think that is horrible for anyone to steal someone works!! I just can't believe they would do such a thing...I think they shouldn't be here if they do so all I have to say is good choice!

I know, right? I've worked really hard for what I can do. I'm not hardly good at art and I know what it's taken for me to be where I am. So, for people who have relly awesome art it must have taken them forever to get as good as they are. I've only been drawing anime since I was 12, but that year and a half were not easy.

yeah we all start out not being good at drawing and we work really hard to get better. It's not fair for someone else to just take our hard work that we put our hearts and souls into creating and claim it as their own. Good ridance!

uh-huh. There's this girl on Otaku, her username is psyconorika, and she's a wonderful artist. Really top notch. Well, like every few weeks someone is stealing her art on some site. In the last 2 months, there's been 3 of them. I feel so bad for her.

I wonder how you can stop that from happening!? Any of you guys know?

You can't STOP theft on the internet... but you can do what I do to make it easier to bust them.

And I took this from Hirschfeld (Fabulous artist) He always hid his daughter's name NINA in all his works somewhere.

It's like a game almost to spot the NINA in his peices.

So now I always hide a "D" in my lineart somewhere in addition to my more visible signature at the bottom.

I probably won't be able to do it with my sketches but with more detailed work it's possible. I'll keep that in mind next time I do a more finished piece.

I always put bogusred.net on all of my art, that way if it manages to pop up on someone elses site, people know where the true artist's home is. But it's easy to crop it out. With my experience though, it's usually the ignorant who are stealing art. They don't have any software or the know-how to crop or airbrush signatures out. That at least works to our advantage.

Perhaps an even better way to prevent theft is to build relationships with a lot of artists and do a LOT of art and have a distinct style. That way, if someone steals your art, someone else who's seen your work will spot it right away and let you know.

Other than that, what else can you do?

Wow.. Its a shame for people to steal others work. They really deserve to be banned and put up on the wall of shame. Good job with handling the problem!

Wow, so many people on that list! haha, I didn't think so many people who actually think of stealing! T^T How sad! Hrms, I guess people just can't help being jealous and posting up someone elses works. That's just stupid and worthless! I hate people who steal art. You know though, if you want to be as good as someone else then try harder, no need to go and post their drawing up! Geez!I thought they'd be smart enough to already know that! I mean, drawing, geez, for me, i draw som,ething and if it looks bad but i love it, I LOVE IT!! I don't usually care what people say about my arts, unless they say you can work on this or that. But you know, I guess some people can't take that. By the way, i can't believe she's single and looking and she's only 14!! I'm 14! Geez, as long as i have my anime hotties, i'm fine! I watch tons and tons of anime! I'm so happy! It's very sad though that so many people here are banned.

The way this site works is that you can't sign up with the same email twice. That is one way of preventing them from signing up. They can only sign up for as many email accounts as they have. If they have a static IP address I can ban them that way. But that's really all anyone can do.

If you scroll down the comments on the Chibi that Metallica stole... you'll see his COMMENTS on the submission!

LOL! You can PINpoint the exact DATE he stole it with ye old RIGHT CLICK-SAVE AS!

What did his icon look like D? His icon had errors in it and it didn't show up in Firefox for me. I kept telling him to fix it and he never did. I guess he thought there was nothing wrong with it. I wanna see his comments.
