hey, anyone want to take a crack at a religion question? i was bored and stumbled across so odd site who's creator was convinced the sixth of June, 2006 (6/6/6) was going to be the end of the word... or some crap like that, so i looked up that date and other sites were being numb nuts too, one said it was a religious conspiracy. i'm thoroughly amused by the prospect, but wanted to know what anyone else thought about it. keeping in mind the world was suposed to end on 2000 though...

I know, right? People get all nuts over stuff like this. My mom sent me over to the Acme next to my house one day. That day happened to be right before somebody, I forget who, said their would be world wide water contamination. So, in any case, I was sent over to get a basket full of things and some water. There was only one left on the top shelf. I couldn't reach so I climbed on the first shelf to get it. Well, this guy, out of no place, knocked me off the shelf to get the last bottle! I was like 11! We were just out of water and needed some but some of those people were going NUTS over it!

Bah...for all the time the end of the world has been annonced...it's not really scaring me. And, feh, if it's the end of humankind (the earth will go on without us)...then we'll all be dead, why stress over it?

Hmmm, end of the world eh? I'm not really into the whole apocolypse thing. I think the world will end one day or at least humans will become extinct one day (that's kind of just how things work, right?). My vote for the end of humans goes to some kind of virus. Like the plague, only worse. AIDS could do it. I read a statistic that in the next 10 years, one third of Africa will be gone due to AIDS. It will probably have to be faster then AIDS, some super-influenza virus or something.
Does anyone know where the whole pentagram and number of the devil thing started? I never knew why they were "evil" or signs of the devil.

Ignore it. Thay said that all the coputers were gonna die in 2000 with the Y2K bug. That was a big nothing. Then the same in 2001. That was a big nothing. There was another we missed. That was a big nothing too. Someone is just playing around with the 'devils number' Seriously- There are weirdos that get off on that kind of thing ^^;

Pentagrams became "evil" during the witch hunts before then they were considered protection signs by the pagans. At least if I remember right, it's been a while since I was reading about witchcraft, LOL.

Does it have any meaning? I guess I don't see what is demonic about a 5-point star with a circle around it or three numbers that are all the same. Thanks MD for explaining the history! I grew up in a highly censored town where certain things weren't even talked about (such as evolution, any religion that's not Judaism, Islaam, or Christianity, or certain works of literature like Catcher in the Rye, etc) So I admit I'm lacking in this regard. I got some of it in college but only in the first 2 years. In the second two I was forced into hiding and burried under mountains of homework, papers, and clinicals to prepare for a career in medicine. My friends often joked that I was a hermit because they usually only saw me a couple times a year and usually during breaks because my classes were at different hours, I was in hospital clinicals at least 2 days/week, and my classes were in obscure parts of buildings.

I have hermit status now, LOL. I only leave the house to shop or go with my kids and their freinds who live right across from us to the park. *SIGH* Yet another reason to go home.....free babysitters that I trust unconditionally, LOL.
As for the meanings, there are many other symbols you add to it depending on what you are trying to cast. So I can't give you any one definate answer. The reason it became demonic is because the witches were thought to be demons and they used it... therefore it was also evil. *Shrug* Warped minds of the past, LOL.

I may be wrong in this because I know the basic premise of a few religions but not much detail, but I thought the Star of David had 6-points while a pentagram has 5. Like I said, I'm not real sure on this so I could be wrong. Thank you all so much for answering my quesiton. I KNOW THIS ONE!!! yeh me...lol, emmet849, i have your answer! hehe *is very proud of herself* first off, the pentacle is a pagan symbol, but most think pagan is devil worship when it really means quite simply country dweller. the pagan religion is that of nature worship, with the goddess Venus, goddess of woman sexuality. this religion has the belief of man and woman harmony, yin and yang really. when one is off, there is chaos, with out one, the other is unbalanced. Venus and the planet are one in the same, and every eight years, a perfect pentacle is trances in the stares with Venus. thus the symbol came about as a symbol of perfection and beauty, a symbol of the "sacred feminine". but after Christianity came around the pagans out numbered them by far. the church then changed the pagan symbols to demonic meanings, and killing pagans (women especially) for heresy and witchcraft. this tactic eventually won this "religious war" against the pagans, and the meanings of their symbols were never changed. (including others such as Poseidon’s trident as the devils pitchfork) *nods* i read the da vinci code and looked up nearly everything he said in it, and all of it is historically correct!!! cooooool...right anywho, just read pages 36-38. he explains it a lot better then i do.

Wow! I am impressed. Thank you so much for answering my question, I had no idea. I knew a little bit about the pagan religion like the god and goddess and that Christians had actually put Easter and Christmas when they did to coinside (or basically overtake) pagan holidays. Thank you so much for explaining the pentagram and the devil's number.

....screw it.. ..what i had said was basically, the Da Vinci Code is very close to, if not already, a masterpiece...*sighs* i lost my umph...how sad...anywho, read the book, almost every page has interesting facts like that, and it's not random, every fact has something to do with the plot and is perfectly woven into the story line that it's not a history lesson. this is coming from someone who fails everything except art, and then forgets literally everything, take my word for it, it's extremely interesting, I’ve remembered every little fact and clue in there! and i hear Angels and Demons is even better, it has the same main character as the Da Vinci code, but the stories are only related breifly, you can read one with out the other....right....now that i'm way off subject.... ![[emoticon]](http://www.paperdemon.com/images/forum/mysmilies/15pxyellow_low.gif)
