Is it me, or is it starting to become rare to see someone with a spark of passion now days? In fear of sounding old here, people stealing art cause they can't draw, people being unemployed cause they can't be bothered trying, people that couldn't be bothered getting to know you cause you're 'black' (technixally brown, but they... technicalities)

My recent one is Scouting. Back in the days, Scouting is huge. I'm a Cub Scout leader (7-10 year old scouts) an have found a plummet of interest in becoming a leader cause they're 'too busy' and everythign has block walls.

Is passion a dying virtue? I mean, every day, the world gets more and more grey. Why is everyone so self centered now days? *sigh*

*end rant*

I agree with you arkillian. I have noted that in my enviroment alot. Like noone wants to create anything anymore like art or writing. It's alot easier to buy a picture than to draw one. It's called consuming culture. I've heard from alot of my college teachers saying nobody wants to write books anymore and stuff like that. I admit I become quite lazy myself. [emoticon]  So you're definitely right about lack of passion. [emoticon]

I have thought about this too, in the past.

Whenever I start to think that there's no passion in the world, I look a little harder.

All around there are people who strive to become better at what they do. Olympic athletes, for example. Most of us here on PD are trying to improve our art or writing. And then there are all of the people in the entertainment industry, which is a lot more complicated than we are led to believe. There are plenty of people with ambition, and enthusiasm.

Personally, I believe that it is rather short-sighted of us to think that most of the people in the world have no drive. After all, most of the people on the planet are living in oppression and/or poverty, and would happily walk a thousand miles every morning just to go to school and be educated, for a better future.

Well, i can only speak for me and for me passion is everywhere. I think passion is in the eye of the watcher...You just have to look for it and you'll see it. In a couple kissing on the street, in a old man who plays guitar in the subway, in a flower that grows between cracks in the pavement, in the wind that raises the dried leaves in his path, in two people arguying, in my roommate when she clean the apartement, in my sister who play with her cat like a mother with her children...its everywhere in different ways...

I agree with Annieo when she says that its our job to show our passion, like that we might contaminate the ones who see the world as boring! [emoticon]

I agree with lili and Nettie. Passion is in the eye of the watcher. But for me I really don't see any passion. Take my school for example if I'm sooo into doing something (like drawing and writing) people around just look at me weird and say 'Why do you do that?? do something cooler' To me I guess (and this is just having experience around the kids in my high school.) People aren't passionate because it isn't the thing to do. The "in" thing is sitting around watching TV and just being lazy. Take a group of friends "what did you guys do on the weekend?" "I sat around and did nothing" "Hell yea same here" High fives all around and then there's always this person " Well I jogged around my neighborhood. And then spent some time with my relatives. And then I went to an afternoon class." silence "Dude you're so lame" *sigh*. That's my two cents but don't get me wrong I think there's plenty of passion in the world it's just afriad to come out.

Yup. Yup. Yup. Someone sent me a PM on here just this weekend telling me someone stole my art. I was really, truly upset. I know I'm not great at art but I work so hard at what I do. It really is something most people are without. No one seems to care about how they treat others.

I think people should treat others as they would like to be treated. Ah well, at least we all treat eachother nice. ^_^

My point wasn't totally about indiviuals being un passionate- there is gold everywhere you look. The quantity of it seems to have lessened. Children that were happy to go to the beach for christmass and get a ball for a present. Mothers that backed their own cookies. Fathers that defined the family with his skills. The children that strived to impress. It all seems to have slowed down. Mothers buy bakery. Fathers hire someone else to make stuff. Children sit behind the tv and don't play sports. Every shadow has a light emitting it, and I always look at the goodness in everyone. It sadens me when people are so surprised at small efforts. I reminded a lady a year ago that it was free parking on Sunday when she went to pay for her parking, and she was totally shocked. I was chatting with a friend on the street, and apparently a few neighbours told his parents that they were delighted to see such a happy positive person outside doing something. Is the world becoming dead or something? Its like the level of expectation is lowering. There will always be someone wanting to be better for money of fame, but not to get that? Charity? PEople can't seem to dig into their hearts to donate time and effort.

I guess my point is broader than I can explain if it makes sence ^^;

Ah, i think i understand what you mean Soosie...There are some people that would step over a dead body on the streets. I remember when i first arrived in Montréal i was walking on one of the popular street of downtown (St-Denis) and there was this homeless guy lying on the sidewalk, crying is heart out. When i saw him, i almost started to cry and i did when i saw how people ignored the poor man, they just stepped beside him like he wasn't there at all. I went to him and almost got my head bitten off because he was soooo drunk, but at least i didn't ignore him. Some people wont look at anything around them so lost in their own lives they are, but when something bad happens to them...they're the first one to scream at people how heartless they are. But i think the more important thing to do, is show our own passion, our own generosity and compassion, teach it to those around us, so that these person teach it to their loved ones...on and on.

I feel like I have shutters on or maybe rose colored glasses after reading this topic. I see passion and kindness all over and everyday. I live in a really run down area but the people around here are always out and about helping each other or just playing and talking. I know some of them are dealing and few other bad things but its not dominate. I see young parents that don't speak hardly any English working themselves to the bone to make a better life for thier children than they had. My best friend down here comes to mind in particular, she's only 19 and has two children the same age as mine. Her husband works alot and she is working and going to collage but they both take time to enjoy just being a family with thier kids. They go for walks and to the park and go to the kiddy amusments the city sets up. They are so passionate about just living to me and that is only one example I see. I don't know like I said I may have rose colored glasses on but I know I see the goodness and the struggles of people and I am very confident people in general will eventually show the qualities I see to all and any who care to look.

MoonDemon- That wasn't really the point of this forum thread. My comment was on the change of passion in comparison to 20 years ago or so. People now days just don't seem to have the drive to bring colour anymore- as a generalisation. Obviously, there will be people that when wedged into a corner must perform. I myself am wedged in a corner for helping out my cub group. If I left, I feel that our cub pack would also fall through, cause everyone relys on me to organise everything. I pass some responsibility on, and they tell me of dire stomach aches that they are having treated- like, why didn't I get told ages ago? ^^; I look at the positive side of things too. It just sadens me to see how stupidly small things seem like gold to some people. Acts of kindness shouldn't be a godsend. Drive to become beter shouldn't be stopped by haters. People should learn that To get to the top of the mountan, you will have to push your limits, and sweat a little.

Its the consumer sociaty. The one thing of live that can depress me slightly [emoticon]

I may be young, but I've realized that...people are apathetic..

People don't bother to go to  friends' houses anymore - It's all about Myspace and text messaging. Kids drone themselves by watching TV for hours instead of finding a real hobby. Businessmen take advantage of starving children and ask for 'donations' on TV. Real musical expression is replaced with plastic, souless 'music' to sell to the masses.

It's sad really..but the only thing we could do these days is to combat this by showing our own passion. Like you said, it's the consumer 'manufactured' society [emoticon] Everyone is out for thier own gain.
