Well, it seems I have a problem ( go figure O_O;; ) My cousin just got Photoshop CS2 and has allowed me to use it when I go over to his house.Which is like hardly even once a month that I see him.Stupid cousin.

...Well here is the problem, I don't know how to use the layers.And he won't tell me how to >:-(

He is evil I tell you.Evil.

 Do layers really need to be used anyways ? I am SO confused !! O.o I have no clue how to work them >.<;; I have tried looking up tutorials on Goggle and they are all to advanced for me or they don't go through every detail ( Which is sadly , what I need >.> )I have tried to color my picture like 5 times and I am not gettting anywhere cause things are to advanced on the tutorials.Grr.

 So ..please if ANYONE knows how to work this thing I am all ears !

All of your controls for the layers should be on the Layers Pallete:

Ignore that red arrow. This is a screen shot I used for one of my tutorials. Anyway, if you don't see this pallete on your screen, then go up to the menu at the top and go to Window > Layers.

That should bring up the Layers pallete. Now, all you have to do to add a layer is click the little icon that looks like a curled page. It's to the left of the trash can icon at the bottom of the layers pallete. Just keep clicking it to create layers. To delete a layer, just click the layer you want deleted and drag it to the trash can.

Don't worry about the other icons on the bottom. Just those two are all you need to worry about at the bottom there.

The eye icons that you see next to each layer are to HIDE and UNHIDE layers. If you can see the eye, then the layer is visible. just click the eye to hide it. Really, that is all you need to know about layers to get started.

To change which layer you are drawing on, just click on the layer in the pallete you wish to switch to.

Let me know if you have any specific questions about photoshop and I can probably help you out.

Thank you very much ! I do have a few more questions but I can only ask one real quick because my brother wants the computer now. X__X Anyways I was wondering about the shading and how I do that ? Everything is very confusing it would be so much easier if somone I knew at my house knew how to do it >>

I have a tutorial on painting using an airbrushing type of technique. It assumes that you already know how to use the paint brush tool though:

http://www.paperdemon.com/storyview.php/id/762.html

I can write up a beginers tutorial to Photoshop if you'd like.

Layers are a definate thing to have! [emoticon] What I do with layers usually is have one fr everything that I might color so just incase I need to earse something I won't mess up any of the other colors. For example, I use one layer for the skin color and one layer for the shirt and pants and things like that. Red will probably show this on a tutorial that she might make for you but what I do to shade is once you pick the [emoticon] tool and at the top of the screen there should be a space that says 'mode' and then a dropbox where it says normal. Click the arrow to go down and choose the option multiply. That is just like using water colors the more you go over the color the darker it gets. To change how dark it can be use the opacity slide bar right next to the 'mode' drop box.  well I hope that clears up some stuff. There's also some cool highlighting effects that you can use with screen & color dodge in the mode drop box. Just make sure you change the flow and opacity cause it can come out to strong

Well that's if you want to collapse them that means you compile all your layers on to one (making it one whole pic). Which I don't usually do unless I change it to a jpeg. It still looks the same with all them layers separate and it still makes them editable but if you collapse them you can't mess with the layers anymore. does that make sense [emoticon] You can also move around your layers. like say you want you lineart to show up on top move your lineart layer all the way to the top of your layers and change the mode box just above the layers to multiply. Just like in Red's reply in the screen shot with the red arrow.

If you're doing a digetal pic- PNG format is beter. JPG has an algerythm (I spelt that wroooong)  that  bleeds certian colours to heck. PNG is 'lossless' IE- doesn't lose any of the origanal colour, but is slightly bigger than JPG. JPG is good for photos where the blurryness isn't too much of a problem [emoticon]

'Flaten'ing the picture is great before you shrink it, cause then you have a large version for printing that is as small as it can get. I always keep a High quality version, and a veiwing version. Sometimes I keep the layered ones, but not often- I have a tendancy to use 20 or more layers at a time to get the filters right. It takes up alot of room on the old hard disk ^^;

Really?? I never had a color bleed problem with jpeg format but I believe you [emoticon]

Yeah PNG's tend to look a lot crisper than JPGs. Once I started using PNG's I haven't really gone back. it's a great format.

Now if those butt wipes at Microsoft would only conform to w3 standards and make their browser compatible with PNG transparency, then people could make better websites using transparent PNGs.

And if the Picasa peoples can make their nearly awesome picture veiwer take transparencys too :nods: There is still alot  of programmes that haven't fully taken png's qualitys. It's sad cause it IS standard now [emoticon]

Jilly- the jpging is like... http://www.deviantart.com/view/5409907/ If you look at Sakura's outfit, it's sort of blurred. It should be cell styled colouring.The colours almost disolve into the black. It takes the colours that are harder to pick up by the eye (reds and blues) and blends them to heck cause the eye can't 'doesn't notice' (yeah right) and does minimal compression on green. Png has a totally different way of doing it- I think it simplifies patterns and in the end, a pic with large areas of one colour become REAL small. Beter than GIF cause you can use the full 3Million colours rather than 256 colours. Its something I picked up on with digetal colouring only really. It broke my heart as a kid doing the effort and it dissappearing. I got pretty good at converting pics to 256 colours ^^;

I haven't used Paint Shop pro since something like version 3. From the version I remember, Paint Shop Pro had a similar interface to Photoshop. But they probably changed it since then. If I had a copy of Paint Shop Pro I could include instructions for it but I don't [emoticon]

Anyway, it will probably be similar. I'll see if I can write that tutorial this weekend.

Oh ok you meant Photoshop. Yeah I think photoshop 7 through CS2 have pretty much the same interface. I don't think there is much of a difference.

Sorry to hear about your time constraints. I've got them too [emoticon]

I'll get to the tutorials this weekend.

After I'm finished procrastinating by looking around in the forums, I'll have to get to work on a set design that's due today [emoticon]
