how do I get a picture next to my name, what is an avatar, and where do I get one. the Avitarity link doesn't work.

I guess that website Avatarity.com is no longer available. Well anyway, the picture next to people's names is what's called an Avatar. Looks like you already have one though so I guess you figured it out.
