Really, the only way to get to know Photoshop and set your own style is to practice practice practice!! You'll find as you go along that you prefer certain tools over others. I, for example, am not very fond of the dodge and burn tools. (
/
) They don't add enough depth and variety to the picture. For shading, I usually just add a solid color in the areas to be shaded on seperate layer from the base color. Then I smudge it (
smudge tool is your friend
) to blend it in. Sometimes I add more than one color for shadows and highlights to make more colorful and realistic.
Inking is something that I'm still in the process of learning. When I ink, I use the 45 calligraphy brush and change the size to about 4-5. (To change the brush set, open the brush drop-down and click on the small arrow in the top corner. The different sets are at the bottom of that drop-down) Then in the brush setings, I change it to Pen Pressure at 45%. Then using the pen tool (
) I click along my lineart to make a line. Then right-click and select 'Stroke line' and make sure the pressure box is checked. You have to do this on a seperate layer from the lineart, though!
Confused yet?
It sounds complicated, but after you figure out what all the tools are called and what they do, it's much easier to experiment. ^^ I'm really not all that good with Photoshop... ;>.>
Hope I helped in some way.

Eek! Oh well, I'm sure I'll get the hang of things. I'll go play with it later and I'm sure I'll learn things as I go, too. But thanks for all your help, everyone.
I really appreciate it!

well one time that might help you is to look at your layers as a blank page. you start with you line art save the first layer as line art.. next duplicat the line art and call it color.. do all of your basic colors here. atfer you get all the basic colors in lock it. next hit new page it is at the bottom of the layer area it looks like pages being turned. now on this page you will have to start your shading .this is where it start to get a little werid.. the way i like to shade is to go to the color layer and us the magic wand on the area i want to shade then go to the shade layer page and start to shade that area..after you are done with that layer lock it and go on to the next. high lights or darker shade what ever you want .. you can have as many layers you want...
you will find that when you do the shading that you can over do an area with color.. if you don't like it you erase the area you want to remove.. and the basic color will stay .. hope this helps....
