Almost exactly as the title says; Do you like PD better than other art sites(such as DeviantArt, etc)if so, why? And if you dont like it as much as other sites, whys that?

Personally, I prefer PD for the fact that its more friendly than DeviantArt. Not that people at DA are mean, per say(alot of good people, including myself, enjoy DA), its just that you get more comments here probably, and everyone replies when theyre messaged and it has an overall warm feeling.

Also, I like it because we know the Administrators as friends, instead of being wary of them because we either have no idea who they are or they are just so untouchable that youre afraid to speak to them.

Also, at DA, it seems like the popular artists are the only ones you hear about, which of course isnt always true, but its like you constently see the same artists in the favorites on the main page. That and your artwork is almost immeadeatly pushed out within seconds because of so many deviations. Here at PD your work stays up until its pushed out because other work comes in, but not as fast as at DA. Also everyone has a chance to have their art viewed and critiqued since it doesnt get pushed away so fast.

I dunno, Im not saying either art site is better than the other, because that is completley youre opinion. Im just saying which one is more preferable to myself. PD is great, and so is DA, but theres just something about this place that makes you feel more welcomed.

What are your thoughts on this? XP

My thoughts on if PD or DA are better are very similar. I like PD better- it is alot friendlier cause there isn't the isolation on mass artwork, people try more here, and there isn't the mass photgraphy. If you don't do fanart, you don't go unnoticed, and everyone gets a chance to be seen.

On the positives for DA- when you are noticed, you may never sleep... ^^;

Well, I'm not an artist, so I can't say if deviantART is better or not.

However, I do overall prefer Paper Demon to MediaMiner and even FanFiction.Net. Mostly because the people here are friendly, pretty much everyone knows each other, and it's a pleasant community. We also seem to repel flamers, trolls and morons, for the most part. Heh heh!

This site also looks a lot better than FF.Net and MediaMiner, and it's much easier to navigate and use.

And of course, the forums are fun! [emoticon]

You could say this place is quality and not quantity. It doesn't have the amount of members or submissions that FF.Net and dA do, but it's overall a better place to be.

Well, let's see. I never really spent a whole lot of time on Media Minor, so I got nothing on them. But all in all, out of all the art (and writing [emoticon] ) websites I've been to, I have to say I think Paperdemon has been the best. Everyone here is friendly (including the staff. On other sites Mods and whatnot seem more like people I have to avoid, like bad teachers, or my old Jr. High principal. ) and, the very big thing that I look for most - this website is very easy to navigate. If you haven't gathered it yet, I'm directionally impaired. I have trouble navigating my way out of my bathroom (scary, huh? [emoticon] ). But with PD, I don't get lost at all. Everything is incredibly easy to find. And if I can't find something, we got some awesome mods to help out (I'm not a kiss-ass! Really! [emoticon] ). I checked out DeviantArt, and couldn't even find the Close button it was so confusing. Fanart Central was easier to find my way around, but still rather confuzzling. And Fanfiction.net - the problem wasn't so much finding my way around, but the people there.

Which brings me to what else I like about PD - as mentioned earlier, the people. Everyone here is really nice, and can actually TAKE criticism. Unlike most of the population of Fanfiction.net and Fanart Central. Honestly, it seemed that every time I said to someone's drawing or poem, or something, "Nice job, but..." they'd start crying, and freaking out. Then they'd call me names, and it once got SO bad that some girl's sister started sending me nasty e-mails. Yeah, really feeling the love. Paperdemon isn't like that. People take crit as well as they give it, and they also give you praise (which is needed just as much as criticism, I believe. Or maybe I'm just a sappy has-been. [emoticon] ) and everyone here supports one another. You wanna be an artist? Go for it. Don't like art, but you wanna be a writer or a poet? We're here for you. Wanna be all of the above and more? We've got the foam fingers ready, and the coffee. The staff is unbelievably great, and friendly. It's gotten to the point that I don't even notice the icons or anything. They're just members with perks. I didn't even know that half of the betas here were betas. [emoticon]

All in all, this site rocks. If the web was holding a "Greatest art and writing site" contest, I seriously think this place would win. It's not even a website. It's a community, and I really love it here. So what if it's small? We've got something better than an abundance of members. We've got the cream of the crop here. Quality of quantity, baby. [emoticon] This place really is a community or artists and writers. No, even better than that. It's home, and I'm really proud to be a member. [emoticon]

Pfffffttt.... You guys are all just a** kissers!

Just kidding!

But seriously, this is all very good feedback. Feel free to elaborate on it more. I'd love to here what you guys have to say about PD versus other sites. Both the good and the bad.

I like Elfwood a lot because it is so massive. It seems like every artist that has inspired me to draw ended up there! BUT..since it is so huge it is an extreme pain in the ass to upload or update anything. So, on the flip side..

PD is a very close knit community and it offers a kind of support system, which ive never seen before. But...If I wanted to browse through some art for inspiration, I think I could look at every picture on here in a day or so. Elfwoof took me months upon months upon months to even get halfway through the fantasy section.

But, I guess it really comes down to what I actually use more; and that would definatly be paperdemon.

Again- this is cause Elwood is alot larger than PD, and alot more well known. It's more likely to have a wider range of artists, and alot more art. But I see your point- a larger site does make for alot more art to look at, but I think PD is at the point now where you need to visit it once a day to keep up with it. It's getting there [emoticon] I think you'll find though that Elwood has been established about as long as DA has. And has the money to advertise. I believe PD's popularity is pure word by mouth till rescently when BR made it more searchable. I'd like to see the activity pick up around here cause of it ^^

Word of mouth is the best form of advertisement.. Before I was suggesting to BR that she should give PD members more motive to spread to word.

I don't know about that. We've currently got over 5,000 artwork entries. We are small but not that small.

Honestly, at this point, if they like the site, that will be enough for them to spread the word. I haven't really come up with any recruiting method yet that I think would be worth while to implement. Because I feel people might just grab a bunch of people they don't even know or they might just create the accounts themselves. I just feel like we might end up with a bunch of inactive accounts. You know what I mean?

I believe the cheapest and most effective way for gaining more members is to do what I've been planning for this summer, which is search engine optimization. That's really how PD got to the size it is today through some SEOing but I just need to take it to the next level.

This is totally true- I never thought of people opening accounts under BS names, but people WOULD do that. Making it easier to serch is a beter idea. It's not as if you're directly getting money out of this like DA does [emoticon]

Word of mouth is a lot more reliable I think. I mean, I would go tell my friends at Art college about it, wouldnt you? The search endine is going to mostly tell the "cold callers" about it... bots and crap.

What I'm saying is that word of mouth is great but I can't really put any incentive on referals because all it would do is degrade the quality of the referals.

I should probably do a little survey when people sign up asking them how they found out about PD:
  • From a friend
  • From another website
  • From a search engine
Just something as simple as that can be helpful to me.

Don't knock the search engine traffic, Angel. Search engine traffic is enourmosly important to paperDemon.com's success because a lot of people surf on in and click the ads. Bots only account for a small percentage of the traffic. The bots come by, spider the site, and add our pages to their index. That increases our rank in search engines, which in turn, increases our traffic. Google Image search has given us the most traffic i think as far as search engines go.

Search engines are way too important to ignore.

How do the bots find the site? My friend had a pokemon fan site and the bots never found it. It's weird. Do you need to list it somewhere?

Ehhhhhh- but fanfiction is MENT to be a fiction only site. There is a slight difference. How does it compare with user-bility? Is this easier to navigate of not?

Hmmm..I dont know. I know that Red Curtain has more of a chance of succumbing to that. It probably depends on the traffic and popularity. Or it could just be bad luck. Lol.

Yes, you have to either list it in the DMOZ directory or you have to have a popular website link to it. The search engines wont know it exists until it spiders a website that has a link to your site and then it says "ooh I haven't spidered this site before" and then it spiders your site. So yeah, tell your friend to list it in DMOZ.

It can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months before a search engine will find your site in the DMOZ directory though. I think I listed bogusred.net there back when PD was bogusred.net but I don't remember if I ever listed paperdemon.com.

I like this site better. The design is just better. And I've never been to any of these other sites so this one is my only choice [emoticon] besides, I already have my writing here, so no need to go to any other site.
