Celebrating Peace in Our Time

Posted: Jul 5, 2006 3:39 am

Back in the 1990s the Clintion Administration sent former president Jimmy Carter to meet with the North Korean leader where he proceeded to bribe them to abandon their weapons development before they could make an atomc bomb by appeasing them with hundreds of millions of dollars in aid, food, oil and a nuclear reactor.  Carter came back to the U.S. and declaired "Peace in our time," and won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.

Today, July 4, 2006, North Korea has test fired up to 10 missiles including the Taepodong-2 missile, which may be capable of hitting the United States.  North Korea ignored the international community and carried out with their missile test without pre-warning as to where the missiles would be tested. They have bragged repeatedly of posessing nuclear weapons.  The Appeasement policy enacted by the Clinton Administration did not prevent N. Korea from developing nuclear weapons and it did not solve the problem.  Rather, it allowed the situation to escalate into the current circumstances where N. Korea is openly defying and being hostle to the rest of the world.  This is just one more example in a long line of examples that show that when dealng with terrorists and hostile nations, appeasement does NOT work.

In this picture is North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and former Clinton Administration Secretary of State, Madaline Albright.
