I wrote this for a History Assignment - we were supposed to "write an outline for a chapter of a book arguing whether or not Hitler would have continued fighting if France and Britain had denied his demands during the Munich Conference." However, I was in the moment, and this is what I came up with.

Just remember as you read this - I am NOT a history buff.

The information this stranger provided me with...was almost too much.  With immense detail, he told me everything about the war.  At his own expense, he relived every second of the horror, opened all doors that he kept closed for years.  For only a few hours, I felt as if I was there for every second of it.  I saw it all.  All of the pain, the suffering, the...the screaming hell!

I fell back on my chair and simply stared at the floor in horror.  Perhaps I wasn't ready, as he had told me I wouldn't be.

The stranger leaned back and placed his hands in his lap, patiently waiting for my response.  For a former Nazi, he seemed so elegant.  It was nothing I could have imagined.  I always thought of Nazi Germans as cold, hideous killers.  This man seemed nothing of the sort.

Finally, I found my voice, and asked him a question that had been taunting me for some time, "If...Britain and France had refused Hitler's demands during the Munich Conference...would the war still have happened?"

Holding his head high, he thought for a moment, but glanced back at me and nodded, "I couldn't say for sure, but I believe it could have happened."

"But Germany's economy-"

"Was nonexistant, " he completed.  "I understand that.  I was there, after all.  Hitler knew, too.  He was no fool.  I imagine he would have withdrawn, bought time, and created a new plan.  It would have certainly stalled the war, but not prevent.  Still, " he smirked, "I can't imagine anyone refusing Adolf Hitler anything.  He had a way of...speaking that almost hypnotized you.  He could make you believe that birds could swim and fish could breathe fire if he wanted to..."
