“Muk! Settle down!” Professor Oak laughed, as the gigantic lump of yuk toppled on top of him happily. “I wish Ash would catch something a little less dominating.”
“Maybe he will, in the Tatakai islands.” Tracey shrugged, trying to pull Muk off his mentor. “Still, I’m curious myself about what he’ll find over there.” Professor Oak nodded.
“Yes. With him and my grandson Gary going, they should have no problem sending back some pokemon for me to study.” Finally freeing himself from Muk’s grasp, he stayed on the ground a moment longer, pondering all of the new pokemon, as Muk engulfed Tracey.
“Augh! Get off me!” Tracey bellowed, being completely ignored by the famous researcher.
“Yes, it wasn’t that long ago, that young water trainer Jessica discovered those islands. I remember it like it was yesterday…”
“M... ! Professor! Muk has got me again!” Oak sighed deeply, still engulfed in his dream world.
“She was caught in a powerful storm when she was training, and stumbled upon a few islands. She found a few undiscovered pokemon… and a strange new type.”
“Get off Muk!” Tracey tensed, heaving off the over excited Muk finally, and watched it cautiously as it loomed beside him. Shrugging brightly, Tracey eventually smiled. “Well, at least Muk means well, even though it gives me the creeps when it looks at me like that!”
Professor Oak chuckled amusidly, spinning the GS ball around his palm.
“Maybe the trip to Tatakai will prove useful for discovering more about this GS ball. Perhaps it holds something... Or is only for one type of pokemon.”
“I’d really like to see Tatakai’s new pokemon,” Tracey murmured to himself. “Ash’s trip to the Jhoto league has really gotten me curious about these new pokemon. I haven’t seen many of them!”
“Professor Oak!” A voice cried happily. “We’re here!” Turning to the voice, Professor Oak lit up briefly, as Ash and Misty flew into the room.
“Ash! Misty! How are you? Pikachu has a very healthy coat! Brock’s new diet must be really helping! Has Togepi leant any new moves, Misty? I must say, it is a little cutie! Where’s Brock?”
“Fighting with Mr Mime over who cleans up the breakfast.” Ash moaned,
“Really?” Oak laughed. “I wouldn’t mind Mr Mime around the lab if it enjoys cleaning that much!” Ash grinned, spotting Tracey looking at Muk worriedly. “Done any new sketches, Tracey?”
“Uh, not recently,” He admitted softly. “I’ve been helping the Professor with figuring out the GS ball. We think that it’s a ball for specific types or breeds of pokemon, or maybe that it has one inside already.”
“Wow! Cool!” Ash beamed. “I hope it has something already inside! It could be an aerodactyl!”
“Or a tentacruel!” Misty sighed dreamily. “What a cutie!”
“Or a new breed that we’ve never seen before.” Professor Oak nodded, handing Ash the GS ball. “I’d like you to take the GS ball once more Ash. My grandson maybe better at training his pokemon, but you learn far more about yours than he does.”
“I don’t know whether to take that as a compliment or an insult,” Ash said ruefully, accepting the strange ball from Oak. “Has Gary come yet?”
“Left early this morning with my last Lapras. He’s a very eager young fellow.”
“Already?!”
“Yes. He’s determined to knock off all the gyms before their first competition.”
“Told you Ash. Gary is always one step ahead of you.” Misty grinned.
“How am I gonna get there?!” Ash bawled, falling to his knees in sorrow. “I don’t have a Lapras anymore! I set it free with the others!”
“Ash, it’s OK.” Oak said soothingly, crossing his arms. “I’ll call up Gary, and get him to send his Lapras over once he gets there.”
“No!” Ash started in pride. “I won’t accept help from Gary!”
“Pika pi!” Pikachu agreed firmly.
“Hot head,” Misty said cooly, tossing a pokeball from hand to hand. “I’m a water pokemon trainer, remember? Staryu could ferry us.”
“Staryu isn’t big, or strong enough for everyone,” Tracey put in thoughtfully. “Besides, it’ll freeze. The islands are surrounded by ice. Only a Lapras could stand the cold.”
Turning away tensely, Ash looked at the GS ball, as if it could solve his problem. He didn’t want Gary’s help anymore than Gary would want his, but he had no choice.
“Ok then. Call Gary.” Ash retorted pridefully, tightening his hold on the GS ball. “Don’t tell him that I needed it though.”
“Alright Ash.” Oak nodded sadly, picking up the telephone. “Tatakai Islands, Shinka city please. Yes, has a boy called Gary Oak arrived yet?...”
“There’s no need to feel downhearted, Ash,” Tracey advised, leaning on a wall beside the young trainer. “Gary has grown up allot since you last met him. He’ll be much more understanding abou...”
“Ash wants my help?!” A familiar voice cackled. “Sorry grampa. I just thought that I’d never see the day that Ash the high o mighty ‘I’m gonna be a pokemon master’ Ketchum would ever want my help!”
“The Lapras was caught by another trainer, Gary, so in effect, they’re lending it to Ash. Now if you’d just...”
“Darn Gary,” Ash snarled angrily. “He’s always one step of me! I’m sick of it!” With that, Ash threw the ball in spite. He gasped in shock as the ball opened with a beam of light shooting brightly from it. “Professor Oak! The GS ball has something inside it!”
“WHAT?!” Professor Oak leapt in surprise, turning around to see what looked like a gigantic Lapras with a pair of hydropumps coming out of it’s incredibly solid looking shell. Frozen in shock, Oak’s jaw nearly hit the ground. “The GS ball had a Globras inside of it!”
“A Globras?” Ash echoed stupidly. “What’s that?
“A Lapras evolution!” Professor Oak cried in delight. “Welcome to your first Tatakai Island pokemon Ash! This is one of the first pokemon that they found after its discovery!”
“I didn’t know that Lapras evolved,” Tracey gaped. “Maybe there’s a stone only found in those islands that can evolve it.”
“Muk!” Muk beamed at Tracey’s momentary distraction, engulfing the boy again.
“Oak!”
“It’s gorgeous!” Misty beamed, giving the thoroughly confused Globras a hug as the group ignored Tracey’s dilemma.
Stunned by the Globras’ mysterious appearance, Ash continued to stand gob smacked, ignoring Pikachu as it leapt onto his shoulder curiously.
“I got the first Tatakai island pokemon. Eat that Gary!”
“Looks like Ash doesn’t need help after all, Gary.” Oak chuckled.
“I need help!”
“Muk is only being friendly, Tracey,” He laughed, turning back to his grandson’s image.
“Globras?” Turning the screen to the Globras, Ash bounced in the way with a gloating grin.
“Hiya Gary. Like my Globras?”
“It’s... unusual.” Gary squirmed, trying to look past Pikachu in interest. “That was in the GS ball?”
“Hey! Let me see Gary!” A voice cried from behind him, suddenly shoving him off his feet. “Is that what was in the GS ball Grandpa?!”
“Sure was Shelly!”
“Shelly?” Ash breathed, turning to the screen in wonder. “Who are you?”
“Gary’s sister!” A feminine voice laughed from Oak’s phone. “Gary is gonna catch me a Tatakai island pokemon to start me off in my training to be a pokemon master cause he’s got so many different types of pokemon.”
“So have I.” Ash sniffed cockily, looking back at the Globras. “Globras must be strong if it’s Lapras’ evolution!” Just then, Globras tore Ash’s cap off, chewing on it hungrily. “Hey! That’s my special cap!”
“Sorry I’m late! Mr Mime eventually let me fini... What is that?!” Brock appeared from nowhere, shocked at the huge cap snatching pokemon.
“A Globras.” Ash replied, snatching his cap back forcefully. “My cap isn’t breakfast! Specking of which...”
“I brought some with me!” Brock grinned, holding up a bag of delightful delicacies. “Feel free to dive in!”
“All right!” Ash’s cheer finished was cut off, as the room immediately filled with a thick cloud of mist. “Hey! A mist attack!” Feeling around his pockets anxiously, his hands fell on a familiar pokeball. “Pidgeot! I choose you! Whirlwind attack!” Pidgeot emerged from the ball instantly, going into an ear piercing shriek. Seconds later, the mist was gone, but so was Brock.
“Pika Pika chu!” Pikachu cried, pointing across the room.
“Brock?!” Misty gasped. “He’s…”
“Mmyet mye myout myo myea!”
“Globras is eating Brock!” Ash cried as he spotted the creature engulfing his friend. “OK. This is war. Pidgeot, sand attack Globras before it swallows Brock!” Squawking indetermination, Pidgeot sped over to the Globras, using its great wings to distract the creature. Globras’s eyes widened in surprise, dropping Brock back onto the floor. As Pidgeot finished it’s hurricane, Ash withdrew the gallant pokemon.
“Close call Ashy boy.” Gary’s voice called from the telephone. “Your Pidgeot is looking good, but pops is gonna be charged mega for this call. Shelly and I better go.”
“No! Wait!” Shelly cried, trying to push past her brother, catching the group’s attention. “I want to see Ash’s Globras. Ash, come by the Shinka city’s pokemon center as soon as you get here. I really want to see it!”
“Oh, really?” Ash blushed slightly, as a pretty, black haired girl appeared on the screen. “To see my Globras?”
“And to fight you!” She grinned, holding up a pokeball. “Gary says that you’re an easy fight.”
“I...” Looking aside, he considered his comeback. “Fight? I thought you were a beginner. You couldn’t possibly win,” He replied determinedly, pointing his GS ball at the Globras, calling it back. “There’s no point. Can’t you find another rookie somewhere?”
“Ash will gladly fight you Miss Oak!” Brock suddenly leapt by Ash, grinning sneakily. “And for your heart I bet!”
“The only thing you’re gonna fight is... Huh? Oh shut up Brock!” Misty blushed, systematically dragging Brock back by his ear. Watching Brock being pulled off, Ash adopted a crimson face.
“I really don’t know him.”
“Please Ash?” She repeated, fluttering her eyelashes at him seductively. “I’m sure you’ll play nice.”
“I...” Ash’s face immediately turned red in abashment. “Oh, I don’t know. I’ll see if I have time...”
“Alright! Gary promised he’d shout me lunch too! Do you want to join us?”
“Hang on Shelly!” Gary halted, jumping in front of the girl. “Look, Ash. You better play fair against my sis, or I’ll kick your butt, got that?”
“Sure,” Ash narrowed his eyes. “Just get her a good pokemon.”
“Duh. Meet you at the Shinka gym.”
“What is it?”
“Some ‘evolution’ gym. Some crazy chick thinks she can beat me with a bunch of Eevees. No way will that happen!”
“We’ll see, after I beat you in a battle,” Ash grinned, clenching his fist in determination. “You’re going down Gary.”
“Dream on, Ashy boy.” Gary smirked, holding out a pokeball. “I gotta a little surprise in this pokeball called an Espeon!”
“Huh?” Ash blinked in surprise. “What’s that?”
“An Eevee evolution.” Oak grinned proudly, walking back into the room with a piping hot cup of coffee. “I was wondering when it would evolve. It’s a psychic type.” Looking aside dispiritedly, Ash mumbled quietly to himself, “He’s always one step ahead of me.” Turning back to his nemesis, he finished. “I better go.”
“Alright. I’ll give you a one on six battle if you want.”
“Don’t rub it in.” Ash disconnected the line, turning around nervously. “What can I defeat an Espeon with?! It’s a psychic, and I don’t have a Gastly!”
“Ash,” Oak began to advise he helped Tracey return a radio back onto its table. ”Gastly isn’t the only pokemon that isn’t affected by a psychic type.”
“True,” Tracey nodded. “My Scyther would be really good against it. Scyther is a bug type. Dark types are good against it too. Do you want to borrow Scyther?”
“No…” Ash smiled suddenly. “I should be fine. Heracross is a bug type.”
“Heracross?! Of course! How could I forget!” Brock cried happily. “You caught that when you started out for the Jhoto league! It’ll be perfect! Psychic type pokemon don’t have a high defense.” Ash nodded, fingering the GS ball thoughtfully.
“Looks like I’m taking Pikachu, Heracross, Globras, Cyndaquil, Tauros, Chikorita...”
“Chikorita?” Misty questioned. “What about Bulbasaur? And Squirtle? Why not take them?”
“I’ve had Bulbasaur and Squirtle before the Pokemon league,” Ash shrugged. “Chikorita needs more training, and Globras is a water type. I figure that I could give those two a break, and train Chikorita. Besides, I can always ask Professor Oak to send me them if I need them. I can have one of each type this way.”
“Ahh. Ash is thinking ahead.” Brock smiled encouragingly, pausing in his thoughtful position. “The question is, is it enough to win the Tatakai league?”
“Ahh! Who’s side are you on, Brock?!” Ash cried. “No one believes in me.”
“Pass me your pokedex Ash,” Oak laughed, receiving Ash’s over used dex. “I’ll up date the Tatakai pokemon that have been discovered so far.”
“So far?” Tracey asked in interest. “There are ones they haven’t found?”
“Many!” Oak grinned. “Most of these ones don’t have type classifications. For example, trainers have discovered this new type they call a ‘light’ type. They’re suppose to be very strong.”
“Light...” Ash grinned happily. “I’m gonna catch a light type!”
Oak tried to slip the dex into his computer. Narrowing his eyes, he gave the computer a firm kick, before it finally accepted the object.
“You should take close note of these pokemon, Ash. Oh, and I should add, there aren’t many people on the Tatakai Islands yet. Most of the people there are trainers, scientists, and other researchers. No one is allowed to take unclassified pokemon off the island unless intensive research has been done on them. Who knows what this light type could do if it was out in the wild!”
“Heard Professor!” Ash grinned, receiving his dex back from Oak. “I better get going.”
“Of course,” Oak smiled, nodding at Tracey. “Take Tracey with you. He’s a bright young researcher, and would do more good in Tatakai. He’s dying to know about these new pokemon.”
“Bu…”
“Go Tracey,” Oak said firmly. “You can up date me on any new pokemon.”
“I...”
“I’ll be fine!” Oak assured him, standing in front of the rebellious machine. “Giving it a good old kick in the side eventually gets it going! You can take Muk with you if you want too!”
Tracy shook his head quickly, pushing the reset button on the computer, causing Oak’s eyes to widen as it suddenly came to life.
“You know my cell phone number Professor Oak!” He laughed, moving to stand with Ash, Misty and Brock. “Looks like it’s the four of us!”
“Alright,” Ash grinned in determination. “To the Tatakai league!”
“Pika pi!”
