Chapter 1 – The New Job
"Oh my gosh! She really did it!"
Aislin bounced up and down in her chair as she stared at her username on her favorite website – paperdemon.com. Her name was now in red letters, as opposed to their usual tan. Squealing, she checked her inbox, which had one new message. It was from BogusRed, the creator and administrator of the website. Aislin read every word carefully.

Thank you so much for volunteering to be a mod. I know it’s a bit much for someone without a lot of experience, but I appointed you directly to a Senior Mod. I’m sure you’ll do fine.
-BogusRed
Aislin nodded and gave the monitor a thumbs-up. "You bet I will! I won’t letcha down!"
Aislin was always…enthusiastic. Even for a fourteen-year-old she was unusually spirited. She spun around on her chair for a moment with her eyes closed, feeling brushes of her short, dark brown hair whizz past her. She thought back to the week and a half of badgering and begging she had to do to get BogusRed to appoint her as a moderator. She grinned to herself, stopped spinning, and responded to BogusRed's private message, in great length, with her thanks.

Oh, man! Thanks so much for letting me become a mod! I've been a member of this site for almost a year now, and it's been my dream to be a mod here! Eee! I can't stand it! lol. Anyway, I just wanted to assure you that I'm going to be a great mod - your best ever! I promise! I won't let you down! I'm online just about every day, and this is pretty much the only site I visit, so it's a very safe bet that I'm going to be here constantly to patrol your forums for you! I wasn't expecting me to become a SENIOR mod, though. I was only trained as a Junior mod. Why the sudden change? Do you really think I'm good enough to be an actual, full-fledged senior mod?! Oh, wow!! How cool! OMG, thanks!
Love,
Aislin
Each day after school, Aislin would log onto the web and sift through the forums, begging people to break the rules in her presence. She loved Paperdemon, and everyone that was a part of it. So, she vowed to protect the site – with her life, if she had to.
Little did she know that she’d soon be put to the test.
That weekend, a strange package appeared outside of Aislin’s apartment door. She had just gotten out of the shower, and was pulling her favorite T-shirt, a white Paperdemon t-shirt she bought from the site's store, only this one was tye-dyed blue, over her still-damp head when she heard a knock at the door.
"I’m co-O-oming!" she hollered from the bathroom. She finished dressing, and trotted over to the front door, opening it just enough to stick her head out – she knew better than to open the door completely while her mother was away on business and she was home alone.
"Yes?" Looking around, she saw the hallway was bare. She scratched her head. "Weird. I know I heard someone knock." She muttered to herself.
Moving to close the door, something on the floor caught her eye. It was a box – easily one foot across, wrapped in brown paper with a white string bow, tying it. Held beneath the string was a card that read, "To: Aislin" in scripted letters.
Aislin ogled the package for a moment before gasping, "It’s a package for me!" She squealed happily. Snatching the package, she darted into her bedroom, slamming the door behind her.
She set the package on her bedroom floor and squatted in front of it, positively giddy.
"I wonder who it’s from?" she gasped. Examining the outside of the mysterious package, she found no return address.
"Alrighty... what's in it, then?" To settle her curiosity, she pulled off the bow and tore away the paper.
What she found was by far the strangest thing she had ever seen. It was another box that looked like it was made up of a large sum of metal plates, with a giant red button protruding from the top. The button was labeled, "PUSH ME." In boxy white letters.
Aislin gawked at the strange box a, baffled. She turned to her big stuffed dog, Angelo, who was placidly resting on her bed, and smiled.
"What do you think, Angelo?"
The room fell silent as she waited for the dog’s noiseless response. She sighed and glanced back at the box.
"Well, what have I got to lose? You only live once, right?"
She raised her hand but stopped herself before pushing it. "Wait…what if it’s a bomb or something? But who would want to bomb me?" She readjusted herself a bit on the floor until she was sitting on her knees. "What to do…"
As she continued to mull over her options, she began to feel she had to push the button. Not only was she burning with curiosity, but also she was beginning to feel a sort of…supernatural connection to it. The feeling confused her but further compelled her to jump forward, to take that risk. All it took was the push of a button to either throw her life away, bring about a new beginning, or possibly even do nothing at all. Aislin hadn’t even thought of that. What if this weird box was just a strange prank? There was only one way to find out…
Before Aislin even realized what she was doing, her hand slammed on the button. The box made a booming noise, as if something inside it had exploded. Aislin jumped backward and backed away to the wall. She began to shake.
The box hissed, and cracked open at the top. The button disintegrated, and then...nothing.
Aislin's face fell. "That's it?"
Suddenly, out of the box wriggled two wires, two pincers on each wire.
.The color drained from Aislin's face. Screaming, she flung herself to her feet and ran out of her room, slamming her bedroom door shut as fast as she could.
Trembling, she took a few steps away from her door, as she whimpered to herself,
"Aislin, this isn't funny! Wake up, now! Now!"
Suddenly, the two wires crashed through the door and flailed out toward her.
Aislin froze. She glared down at her legs,
"Okay...now would be a good time to start running!"
But her legs wouldn’t listen. She opened her mouth to scream, but no sound came out. The wires danced mockingly, as they slowly shimmied toward her. Now’s your chance, Aislin thought. Run! Fight! Do something!
Her legs continued to shake. She wasn't going anywhere. The wires reached Aislin and surrounded her, one on each side of her head. The pincers flexed, and moved in.
Aislin slammed her eyes shut in anticipation and gulped in a short breath. There was a sudden sting on both of her temples as it felt like the probes latched onto her skin. She felt something being pushed beneath her skin. Dizziness began to envelope her, weakening her grip on reality. Opening her eyes briefly, the world started to swim as she fell unconscious…
Aislin moaned.
What a crazy dream, she thought. Opening her eyes, she pushed herself off of the ground and sat up. She yawned and rubbed the sleepiness out of her eyes.
She gazed drowsily at the pale figure on her right and smiled. Her stuffed dog lay beside her.
"G’morning, Angelo." Reaching down, she gave her dog a pat. However, upon touching it, she quickly noticed that Angelo did not feel soft or fuzzy. In fact, he felt…leathery. Aislin blinked and rubbed her eyes again. Staring at what she was petting, she found it was not her dog, but someone’s foot. She squeaked and jumped back, landing hard on her bottom.
Gaping around the area, she found that she was also no longer in her bedroom, but in a sort of black abyss. She looked back at the foot she had touched and saw it was still being used by someone. A slightly tall, pretty woman with short auburn hair and two elven ears jutting out of either side of her head. She was wearing a simple white gown with golden trimmings – it looked like something a Greek goddess would wear. The woman smiled.
"Hello Aislin." She greeted gently.
Aislin gaped at the mysterious woman, "Wh-Who are you? Where am I?!"
The woman’s smile didn’t waver. "My name is Susie. This is a place you’re very familiar with." She snapped her fingers, and HTML coding flooded the area surrounding her and Aislin. One particular code caught Aislin’s eye, however. It stated, "PAPER DEMON.". Aislin gasped, and turned back to Susie, who nodded.
"Welcome to Paperdemon.com, Aislin. I’m Susie, but I think you’ll know me better as BogusRed."
