BogusRed smiled sadly. "A clever tactic, but when the Mods went missing, their Coms were cut offline. Anyway, I must be getting back to my post – "
"Waitwaitwaitwaitwait!" Aislin shouted, making BogusRed jump,
"I know this is going to sound really weird but…can I have a cool uniform? I kinda feel like a superhero, and I was just curious if maybe you could…magic me up a cool uniform?"
BogusRed stared at Aislin, surprised by the…odd question. "Uhm…of course." Regaining her composure, she clapped her hands and, in a flash of light, Aislin’s clothes changed. When the light faded, Aislin saw that her T-shirt had gone from blue to red, and in gold was the emblem of the Senior Moderator, a shield. She was wearing a plan, black cape that flowed to her ankles. She also donned knee-high, black boots, with demon wings on the ankles. The wings were beige, making them the symbol of regular members. She also sported a black miniskirt that was trimmed in beige at the hem, and black gloves with the same pattern. On the wrists of the gloves were blue wings, the symbol for Betas. She looked at the rest of her costume, and felt something was missing. The symbols for Junior Moderators, Premium account members, and Banned members were not present. Aislin couldn’t figure out why, either.
She sighed and straightened out her cape before looking back at BogusRed. "Thanks for the new outfit! I love it – eh?" She stopped. The spot where BogusRed had stood was now vacant. Aislin stared blankly for a moment, and shook her head. She must have gone back to her post…wherever that is, she thought. She then turned her attention to her new ModCom, and held it up to where she could get a good look at it.
"Hmm…how do you turn it on?" Aislin was never good with electronics, but noticed a small blue button that was labeled, ‘connect.’ So, throwing caution to the wind, she clicked it.
The screen flashed with static, then a person appeared. It was another woman, this time with long, salmon-colored hair and brown eyes. She wore small, rectangular glasses and a set of headphones with a microphone jutting out of on end. She wasn’t focusing in the direction of the screen, and seemed to be typing something on a separate computer.
Aislin stared at the woman. "Uhm…hello."
The person on the monitor stopped typing. She sat back and stared in confusion before turning her gaze to Aislin. The woman’s eyes became so wide, they seemed in danger of falling out.
"AH!" she yelped. Aislin jumped back, still gripping the ModCom. The woman glared at Aislin, "Who are you?"
"Uhm…my name’s Aislin. Who are you?"
The woman stopped to think, ignoring Aislin’s question.
"Aislin…Aislin…where have I heard that name? Oh!" She looked back at Aislin, "You must be the new Mod! BR said something about you this morning!"
"Good to know. Who are you?" Aislin was getting frustrated.
"Oh, right! I’m Arkillian, your new Beta."
Aislin’s frustration turned to confusion. She sighed. "All right. I’m lost. How on earth are you supposed to help me if you’re a bunch of pixels in a box the size of an iPod? What am I even doing here? I’m a Mod, I got that. I’m supposed to look for the other Mods, I’m…coming to terms with that. But Mod duties like, watching forums for flamers and stuff? How do I do that from here? I’m in a black oblivion for goodness sake!"
"Oh, that’s easy! I’ll explain everything. Betas are – " Arkillian stopped. "Did you hear something?"
Aislin stared at Arkillian blankly. "No. Did you?"
"Yeah. It sounded like it was coming from your end, too. A kind of…explosion?"
Aislin stopped to listen. She did hear something. Heavy footsteps…coming her way…
"Look out!"
Aislin whirled around and froze. She was at the feet of what looked like a giant. Easily twenty feet tall, Aislin had to bend backward just to look past it’s large body and get a glimpse of its grotesque face. The creature had green skin, and was wearing a tattered brown loincloth. In its huge hand was a club the size of a small tree.
Aislin began to shake. She took a few steps back. "Ar…Arkillian? Wh-what’s that?" She held out her ModCom so Arkillian could see.
Arkillian also looked worried. "That? …That is a troll."
Aislin winced at the word ‘troll’. "Does…it want to kill me, Arkillian?"
She swallowed, "…That’s likely."
The troll snorted, and Aislin turned and ran.
"What are you doing?" Shrieked Arkillian. "Fight it!"
Aislin continued running. She heard the troll bellow behind her and begin to make chase. "The only thing I’m fighting is the urge to break down and sob like a baby!"
"What about your duties as a Mod? You’re supposed to protect the site! Now get to it, woman!"
Aislin began looking around the abyss, wishing there were some place for her to hide. "Alright, let’s say I do fight it. How do you expect me to beat that thing? I don’t think it’s all that prepared to sit down and negotiate with me!"
The troll roared again, and stopped running. It puffed out its chest and bellowed louder than before. This time, however, flames began shooting out of its mouth – and directly at Aislin.
Feeling the sudden heat, Aislin looked over her shoulder and saw the fire. She screamed and dove out of the blaze’s trail, landing hard on her stomach.
Arkillian, who was being squished beneath the Senior Moderator, began to yell. "What are you doing? Get up!"
Aislin groaned and sat up on her knees. "Sorry, but that troll just breathed fire! Trolls don’t breathe fire!"
"Oh…that must be a flame troll, then. Sorry."
"Of course." Aislin rolled her eyes and stood up. The troll, who could not find Aislin now because of her sudden veer off-trail, began looking around in confusion. It scratched its head.
"So, what do I do?" Aislin glared at Arkillian, "How do I fight a twenty-foot Flame Troll?"
Arkillian smiled, "Hey, you’re the cybernetic superhero. That’s your job."
Aislin turned back to the troll, who still couldn’t find her. Arkillian was right. She set the ModCom down, upright, so Arkillian could watch. Aislin didn’t really like working before an audience, but she felt better with a witness all the same.
Aislin approached the troll, "Hey, big fella! I’m down here!"
The troll peered down at Aislin and snorted angrily.
Aislin pointed accusingly at the troll, "You…you’ve been causing me lots of trouble! And my first day working in a new environment, too! You think you fiends would learn some manners, but I guess not! So, for that, you will be punished!"
The troll snarled and raised its foot. Aislin back away. "Uhm…a-as soon as I figure out how." Aislin shivered. She couldn’t figure out what to do. She stepped back again, and then, she got an idea. Or rather, a thought popped into her head. The troll stared curiously at Aislin, wondering why she wasn’t doing anything.
Aislin thrust her hands out in front of her, and yelled, "Premium spiral attack!" At that, dark and light brown waves burst from Aislin’s palms. The waves circled around each other and collided with Flame troll, sending it flying backward. The troll landed on its back, defeated.
Aislin was also knocked back a few feet. She gained her bearings and gazed at her hands in wonder.
"Wooaah…that was really cool."
Arkillian was also shocked. She shook her head, and called to Aislin, "Aislin! Ban it!"
Aislin turned back to her ModCom. "I can do that?"
"Just do it!"
Aislin sighed. Arkillian was so impatient. She ran over to the unconscious troll. She pointed at it.
"Alright…be banned! Uh…you are…banned…now?"
The troll didn’t move. Aislin glanced back at Arkillian.
"How do I ban it?" She yelled.
Arkillian yelled back, "The same way you fought it! Just do what comes to mind!"
Aislin nodded and turned her attention back to the troll.
"Alright." She placed her hand on the troll’s large forehead. "Troll…you are being accused of causing trouble in the website of Paperdemon.com…and attacking the Senior Moderator, Aislin. You are guilty, and are banished from this website."
Aislin’s fingers glowed. On the troll’s chest, a beige wing came into focus. The wing began to glow as well, and the beige faded to white. The details within the wing disappeared, leaving a white silhouette, and nothing else. The glow around Aislin’s fingers faded, and the troll disappeared as well.
Aislin, confused, scrambled over to Arkillian. She sat in front of the ModCom. "I thought Senior Mods couldn’t ban!"
Arkillian smiled, "They can’t. That troll is on its way to BogusRed right now. She’s the only one that can ban, and she will. Nice performance, though."
A pink tint appeared on Aislin’s cheeks. "Thanks…now, how about filling me in on what’s going on?"
"You got it. Get comfy."
Arkillian began to explain that betas are in charge of monitoring the Mods and helping them to the best of their ability. Aislin, the Mod, is in charge of the physical work. The fight the rule breakers that come along among other things. Arkillian also pointed out that a lot more creatures than usual have been on the prowl.
Arkillian continued to drone on about rule breakers, when Aislin noticed something glowing in the distance. Without thinking, she crawled over to it to get a better look.
"Huh? Where are you going?" cried Arkillian.
Aislin crawled closer to the object and saw that it was a small, green bubble. Inside of it was a green shield. Aislin grabbed the bubble and brought it back to her ModCom. "Arkillian…what’s this?"
Arkillian gasped. "That’s a Junior Mod! When the Senior Mods went missing, so did the Junior Mods. It was theorized that the Junior Mods just got scattered throughout the site and hid. I guess you proved that theory."
Aislin smiled, "Oh, good! Which Junior Mod is it? How do I wake ‘em up?"
"Well…I don’t know. Going with your gut seems to be working."
Aislin nodded. "Sounds good to me." She held the bubble out in front of her and smiled. "Come forth, Junior Mod!"
The bubble began to glow. It burst, and in a sea of light purple flower petals a young girl sprang forth from it. She landed nimbly on her bare feet before Aislin and Arkillian. Her light green dress flowed around her knees. She smiled.
"Thank you for releasing me. As repayment, I will aide you."
Without another word, she leapt into the air and flew behind Aislin before disappearing. Aislin turned around.
"Where’d she go?"
"Aislin! Your cape!"
Aislin glanced back at Arkillian, "My cape?"
Arkillian nodded, "Look!"
Standing up, she took off her cape to take a look. She looked it over and smiled. In the center of her originally plain, black cape was a green, Junior Mod shield. On either side were two yellow demon wings – the symbol of a Premium account.
