Chapter Two: In Which A Plan Is Hatched
Cologne led Shampoo into the Nekohanten and sat her down at one of the tables. “Now then, I just got back from our village, and while I was there, I found some rare herbs.
“What they used for?” Shampoo asked curiously.
“If mixed with the proper ingredients, they create something similar to a love potion,” Cologne explained, holding up a piece of the plant.
Shampoo gasped. It was beautiful. The stem was a deep emerald green, and the leaves were a soft pastel red. At the top was a cluster of tiny blue blooms, each one delicately veined in silver.
“Just like fairy tale!” Shampoo said, reaching out her hand to touch the plant. It felt like a mixture of silk and velvet.
Cologne nodded. “And this fairy tale is about to come true,” she said.
“But how? Ranma won’t eat that.” Shampoo crossed her legs and leaned back against the chair, thinking.
“Don’t worry about it, I’ve got it all worked out. I’m going to make a special lipstick, and you’re going to use it on Son-in-Law.”
“But what about Akane? She no let me get close.”
“As for the girl and her family, I’ve got these,” Cologne said, holding up five tickets. “Nekohanten tickets. This particular café is about a day away from here, plenty of time for us to put the plan in motion. Son-in-Law will remain behind, alone in the house. That’s when we make our move.”
Shampoo’s face split into a wide devilish grin. “Is genius, Great-grandma!”
Cologne waved her hand. “It was simple really. I already had the idea from when I was your age. Of course, the plants were much easier to find back then, but still. I think I‘ve found enough to make a tube of lipstick for you.”
“What happened to your plan?” Shampoo asked curiously.
Cologne blinked, then pogo-sticked over to a small cabinet in the corner. She took out a bunch of small jars and vials and laid them on the bar separating the kitchen from the main room. “It worked,” she said.
“Then why you sound so sad?” she asked, standing up to help Cologne arrange the jars.
“Oh, I’m not sad. The stupid thing became so infatuated with me that I finally had to go search for the cure myself,” Cologne told her, smiling.
“What is cure?”
“It was hard to find when I was young. By now, it might not even exist anymore. It’s a plant like this one, only the colors are mixed up. The stem is silver, the blossoms are green and red, and the leaves are blue.”
Shampoo smiled. “If there no cure, then Ranma will be mine forever!” she said.
“Don’t get so happy yet. I must warn you, the plant is so powerful, that it normally drives the one that uses it crazy.”
“But I thought lipstick made people fall in love?” she asked, confused.
“Yes, it does. The thing is, the other person’s affections are so strong, that drives the recipient crazy.”
That made Shampoo stop for a second. “But . . . Shampoo want Ranma’s attention,” she said quietly.
“Well, sometimes it works out, maybe it will in this case.” She began pouring different ingredients in a big bowl. “Now go see Ranma. I’m sure they’re wondering why you disappeared so suddenly. Besides, didn’t Son-in-law promise you a date today?”
“Aiya! He did! Bye, Great-grandma!” She disappeared out the door so fast Cologne didn’t even get to tell her when the lipstick would be ready.
Meanwhile, in the Tendo Dojo . . . .
“RANMA!!!!” Akane’s yell reverberated through the house, and down a couple of blocks.
“What did I do now, Akane?” he asked calmly, steeling himself to his fate.
“Shampoo is ready to go on her date,” Akane said, appearing in the doorway, one eyebrow arched.
Ranma stood up and walked around her, inspecting her body.
“Uh, what are you doing?” she asked.
“I’m just making sure no aliens have kidnapped the real Akane and replaced her with a nice clone,” he said, finishing his inspection. “Well, I don’t see any antennae or a zipper or anything. Unless you’re hiding it where I can’t see . . .”
“OW! I didn’t mean it that way!” Ranma said, holding his hand to his slapped cheek.
“Oh? Then in what way did you mean it?” she asked.
“I . . . I just meant . . . .”
Akane snorted. “Whatever. Just go on your date.”
“Uh, aren’t you going to grind me into a fine powder and feed me to my dad?” he asked hesitantly.
“No, why?” she asked, the picture of innocence.
“Well, normally it takes me about a week to recover whenever Shampoo comes over, even if I don’t do anything.”
“No, go on. It’ll be a nice change to get you out of the house,” she said.
“Well, all right,” he said, creeping away from her. She was being too nice. This wasn’t the Akane he was used to. For all he knew, she was hiding a gun in her shirt waiting to blow a hole in him when he turned around. “Are you sure you don’t want me to stay? Cause I will if you want me to. Please can I stay?”
“Oh, I get it! You’re trying to get me to beat you up so you can’t go out with Shampoo! Well, you know what? I’m not going to! Being with Shampoo is a far worse punishment than anything I could do!”
“That’s not true! No one gives black eyes and bloody noses like you do, Akane!” he said, trying his best to persuade her. He would even get down on his knees and beg if he had to. His pride didn’t matter when it came to Shampoo. He would do anything to keep her away from him. Even beg Akane to beat him up. The pain would be worth it if it would keep him away from the blue-haired demon.
“Ranma!” A sing-song voice drifted to him. Speak of the devil . . . . “Are you ready for date?”
Ranma’s face went from pleading to plain out terrified. “Akane, please! I’m begging you! Don’t make me go!”
Akane rolled her eyes. “Oh please, Ranma, you sound like a child!”
“I don’t care! Just don’t make me go!”
She pointedly turned her back.
Shampoo came bounding through the doorway. “Come on, Ranma, time is wasting!” she said, grabbing his hand.
“AKANE!!!!!!” His voice trailed off as he was dragged out the door.
