Cold, empty
hands in my pocket, smoke in my lungs
I'll sit on the worn bench in the
frosted park, leaves dying and moon rising
(and I'll wait for you)
under the forsaken trees and smiling skyscrapers
you roused me from sleep in New Orleans and
destroyed me in Paris

so why won't you come save me here?

I wonder
are you busy on our island of nights?
it's raining money, I know, green surrounding your black
your cane tapping the marble floor
are there more stars in the sky where you are?
angel's mane pouring over your shoulders,
red as sin, maybe ours
face in your hands
baby, you've got a lot to learn

some mortals want immortality, some wish for
the kindness of the grave
but your note said, 'join me in death'
so save me, come kill me
you coward, you liar
I don't want your diamond bouquets or
the feasts of kings
I want your wings, your sweet immorality

little devil with hands like stone
eyes like hell, all alone
glimmering hair and shining nails
but you're the cause when a mortal ails

eternal, immortal
eyes to the stars, cheeks warm with life
I walked the beaches of white barefooted
in your soiled jeans and jacket
(somehow, I know you're waiting for me)
away from the crashing waves, the virgin moon
I retreat to shelves of pages and
pieces of what we once were

I can't save you when I can't save myself

I can see
your head bowed, slumped on a wooden bench
the world is at my feet, under me in my black
I loved how you understood nothing
do you know what I fear most?
violet eyes ringed with exhaustion
hazed with passion, ours once
face in your sleeve
lover, you've got so much to learn

Some immortals want eternity, others want
the peace denied them in life
your reply said, 'let death bless me with you'
so I'll come save you, come kill you
and then you can brand me your savior, a saint
you know what you want
but
you don't know what you ask for
I want your life; your chance at deliverance

little orphan who wants nothing at all
you know it's oh-so hard to resist your call
flesh and blood, warmth and bone
because of you, I'll have to reap what I've sown

since the threats I've made and
the windows I've watched you from
I've been the slave of some divine comedy, this love
of mine
there was a time when I could've risen into the night
without you
but the time has passed
coward I am, you unwrapped your wish
like a child at Christmas time

at my damnable error, my broken vow
you smiled at me like an angel
fallen from grace
