I'm a huge fan of Inuyasha, and I love to read fanfiction. I've read enough fanfiction to realize that in almost every story, there was some type of system used when describing the socioeconomic classes. So, I've decided to make all of these terms and orders easier to understand by writing a sort of Youkai Government Tutorial. If I missed anything or you would like to mention a few things, feel free to send a message! :)
Chapters
These will come in different chapters. The second will be on mating ceremonies and how the Youkai go about that. Comments have been disabled for this piece.
There are some names of my own characters in this, so just ignore them. If you use this as a reference for your own fanfiction, just fill in the names as you like.

Basic Government
There are four major Youkai lords who rule over certain sections or regions of ancient Japan. They are Lord Kazuhiko of the North, Lord Takashi of the East, Lord Katashi of the South, and Lord Satoru of the West, respectively. The major lords, also known as Daiyoukai, have power over war, tax regulation, trials and jury, and the passing of laws over their own regions.
Below the Daiyoukai are smaller minor Youkai lords, known as Taiyoukai. These Taiyoukai live in small castles on the Daiyoukai's land, and have power over enforcing the taxes and laws passed by the Daiyoukai, forming militias, settling human disputes, recording and shipping yearly harvest, and other minor duties. Each Taiyoukai has his own messenger who, at the end of each month, will make a report pertaining to the harvest count, deaths, births, ailments, arguments, et cetera, and will travel to the capital to deliver the report to the Daiyoukai Lord of his region. Any information regarding other regions that is discovered by another should be sent in a report to the Lord of that region.
Below the Taiyoukai are human lords and their clans, respectively. The human lord will build his palace on the land of the Taiyoukai in return for protection and orderly law. Any disputes between the clans are brought to the Taiyoukai to be settled. If matters become worse, or cannot be handled by the Taiyoukai, the issue should be brought up with the Daiyoukai lord himself. The human lords have power over the smaller human villages who farm and produce goods that are counted, reported, and exported throughout the region by the Taiyoukai.

The order of the social classes is as follows, red representing beings with Youkai heritage:
1. Daiyoukai
2. Taiyoukai
3. Youkai general, soldiers
4. Monks, priests, priestesses
5. Servants, doctors, healers (of Daiyoukai and Taiyoukai)
6. Human lords and their clans
7. Human commoners
8. Human Servants
9. Slaves
10. POW (prisoners of war)
11. Human slaves
12. Human POW
Basically, if a villager has an issue he goes to the human lord. If the clans have an issue the go to the Taiyoukai. If the Taiyoukai have an issue, or a small human dispute has become larger, they report to the Daiyoukai Lord who rules over them all. Daiyoukai has final say over all issues brought to him.
