Mask: "The Dream"

I made this mask as a gift to Franco Dragone.  He's the person who was the creative force behind several of Cirque Du Soleil's shows ("O", "Mystiere" , "Saltimbanco) as well as Celine Dion's groundbreaking show in Las Vegas.  He procured my brother's talents while working on his newest show "Le Reve" (the Dream) at the Wynn hotel in Vegas...John did some set design * costume design for him, & wanted to thank him for the opportunity.  Hence, this commission.

The mask is very symbolic.  I included several elements of the show's theme; the red scarf (I used an Art Nouveau approach, a nod to classical concepts of French design), the water element (stylized waterfall with Leopard stone inlay), the "fin" (could be a fish fin, or mermaid tail, or dragon wing), and the angel's wing (very powerful scene in the stage production involving angels plunging from 100 feet high into the water stage).

It was FUN to do such an interpretive piece.  The gift really worked by the way; Franco & my brother have had many collaborations since.

"The Dream" Mask, rendered in sculpted leather with amber & stone inlay.  Painted with Liquitex acrylics and antiqued with acrylic stain.
