The Lady Wishmaster: Aurora

Aurora is the only child of the enigmatic and charismatic head of the Deepwell estate and is descended from a long and ancient line of Wishmasters. Since early childhood, she was secluded from peers and only knew the company of Alabastor, the nanny of sorts for the numerous orphans at Deepwell. Her mother did not keep her sheltered from the world for cruel or paranoid reasons; children displaying early traits of a Wishmaster were kept from peers and most other people so they are better attuned with themselves and their rapidly building abilities.

Wishmasters are born blind. They only gain sight when they are "awakened", in other words, when they finally gain the ability to harness their powers in an extreme situation. The period of blindness varies from case to case; Aurora remains blind until she's twenty-five... and I'm not telling why.

A more... unusual trait of characters from this world is their development as they age. Everyone is born non-human, they emerge from the womb as an animal. In almost every case, the child is one of the two animals his parents were. As a child ages, he loses his animal traits and takes a more distinctly human appearance. The transition for this development is much the same as human development and is a form of adolescence and puberty, so it will vary from child to child how soon they appear fully human. Wishmasters are exempt from such conditions and are always born fully human and remain such for the duration of their centuries-long lives.

As Aurora gets older, Alabastor introduces Aurora to a child to whom he's become quite attached, Casper. Casper was an unusual case, he was born human but was not a Wishmaster (for theirs is a rare and dying race). The child ultimately would suffer alienation as he grew up for standing out from his peers. As Casper ages, he takes on more animal traits. He and Aurora become the best of friends; Casper adores her and harbours a secret crush, while Aurora remains oblivious.
