The Angel Egg

Through the living halls, I run, trying to escape this twisted place that is more like a creature than a building. Over the sound of breathing, I can hear the scrabbling of the creatures that maintain and protect the place.

I skid to a stop as I reach a room, a dead end. Eggs are embedded in the fleshy wall of this space. Is this what the maintainers are protecting with such ferocity?

The hairs raise on the back of my neck as I see a widening crack on one, golden light seeping from within. Would it be one of the guardians, ready to feast on my flesh? The shell falls away, and a wing covered in a glowing substance furls out. In the golden light, I can make out the perfect, androgynous features of a little seen race.

An angel...?

Interesting concept and I love the story. I find this piece rather dull. There are not enough differences in values and color for me. The grays of the background seem to be a yellow/green gray, maybe if they were more towards purple or blue it would help. White highlights in places would give the feel of slime or wetness, which would add to the feel of birth. Very interesting from a conceptual point of view, thanks for sharing it.
