Sprigg for Elves at Work

Posted Oct 15, 2005, 11:41:22 AM UTC
This is an art piece I did for my Mom for her birthday. I put it on a CafePress journal.

Anyway the whole Elves at Work thing is this business my Mom and I have been working on on and off for a while.

This was drawn in pencil, scanned, and colored in Photoshop. To create the celtic motif I basically traced some royalty free artwork from a Dover Book. I changed it though. The original design is line work, I actually changed it to be shapes instead of line. Then I scanned it and turned that set of shapes into a Mask in Photoshop and then painted with a spongy textury brush to make it look almost like a dry print or stamp or something. I also gave the background some texture and color variance with various Photoshop brushes. I didn't want the journal to just have a flat color background because that would just end up looking ugly.

Anyway, he's pretty cute, ain't he? What do you think?

Awwwwww...he is so cute! His face is adorable, and I like the way you have positioned the fingers on the hand he is waving, with the two fingers together. I like all the celtic design work, and I like how you have drawn his staff with the twist in the middle and the knotwork on the end. Very cute, great job Susie! Big Smile

This is so adorable Susie! It reminds me actually of the LoTR books cover art from a russian translation I've read. It really looks like something from a book. The inky lines are great. And yes, that little boy is just so cute! I think the green tones are your trademark.^^ Really lovely. I wish I had more of that... decorative style in my works.

Your artowrk is so unique; you have this whimsical kind of style that's just so nice to look at. And he is so cute! I'd love to run my fingers through his hair; looks like it would be fun. Laughing I also like the ink effect you added to the letters...very cool. Big Smile

This IS really cute. I love his curly hair! The celtic knots are awesome--did you do them by hand?
    • Oct 15, 2005, 12:16:21 PM UTC
I did the Celtic knots with the help of a Dover book that has royalty free artwork in it. Artists can use them without limits for art projects. Essentially I traced them and then added some effects to it to make it look sort of aged.
Thank you for the comments Reina Big Smile

That's neat! I need to get a book like that. I tried drawing Celtic knots by hand three years ago for an art project. It didn't work. There is a way you can make knot work with photoshop and words. It's a spiffy effect.

there are fonts you can get that are different knots. try doing a google search for them.

I'll look into that, thanks! Random question: Can we post tutorials here, too?
