Concept art- Ophelia

Posted Feb 27, 2016, 10:51:28 AM UTC

Concepting a new character, cause I felt that a King that ruled a whole continent wouldn't have just one child to pass his throne to, so my OC, Pandora now has a younger sister, Ophelia.

Ophelia has a similar two toned hair colouring to her older sister, and in concepting, I found myself favouring bulby shapes, so I themed her on a specie of dragon in my story called an Embaflai, a palm sized dragon with butterfly wings that radiates a flame that humans can't touch. She's about 10 years old- I don't normally draw children, so I hope I got her age about right. Personality is still WIP.

Till then, I find it easier to concept if I have a drawing of the character in front of me :)

Oooh, a neat design! I really like the color choices.

Thank you Smile The royal family in my story have recently had major revamps done to them... or at least the ladies have had some. I still need to work on the men a bit for their visual language, but so far, the Princesses all have different looks to them which I'm happy with Smile

Well you certainly seem to have a knack for design! I've always struggled with it, so I'm a little starry-eyed whenever I see people work out diversity in character appearances and such!

Well, the diversity in character appearance thing is a separate skill to art, and it's all about themes. It can totally be practiced. I haven't formally studied I'm but a lot I found out accidently with an ace attorney fic I did. People responded positively to me giving my oc Skunk hair markings, and I noticed that the more iconic things I added, the more people liked them. I've done some character design research. There is books out there on it, like with colour meanings over all shapes, posers, stances, etc... I'm still learning, but design is really fun for me to do. Themes go well, cause they allow for costume changes without losing who they are. the themes are cool too, cause they can drive personality or harmonize personality aspects. It's something you could learn though if you want. Try doing a redesign of an oc or a character you love and give it a theme. Experiment with different shapes and colours and see how it works. Make them into super heroes, or Lolita, or an animal... anything is cool. It'll be hard at first, but it gets better the more you go crazy and try stuff out Smile I'm no expert on it, but what I do, I do for fun, and it's totally a skill you need to develop, so if you're interested, just go for it Smile

That's some really good advice, thank you! I've been wanting to practice enriching different character designs for a while and I have... well... one that I'm happy with, out of dozens >_< It's tough, man.
Fortunately though, I have a lot of characters with really fleshed-out personalities in my head who I can subject to practice. I just need the time to DO it.

Yeah- time is the important thing. And it sucks trodding on actual art inspiration to do something you're good at just to try something new. And it does wear you out. I can see the interest in putting it off XD

And also just laziness and procrastination. Not that I know any other artists who have that problem. XD

Fascinating costume design, with the warm colors and misture of gathered and flowing elements, the almost spidery embroidery in front, and delicate, winglike pattern of the crown. She looks like she shall develop into an interesting character, and it's nice to meet Pandora's sister. Smile

I'm not certain whether I would read her as 10, but she at least falls into early teens. And my age estimates are sometimes wonky irl, so Me misreading wouldn't mean anything. :p

She looks like she might be a bit shy - but also like she could keep and use a secret if she needed to. Take or leave that as you will.

Oh yeah- the patterns are meant to be like Monarch butterfly wings, as the Embaflai has firey butterfly wings Smile Not sure what I'm doing with her, but it seems stupid to me a powerful King like Constantine not having a guaranteed second child- he has 2 daughters before Ophelia, but one is a stone statue, presumably never to come alive which isn't ideal. Ophelia may or may not get plot elements, or she could just be Pandora's little sister. IDK.

I'll do some research on how to draw 10 year olds. I may have the face shape a little too long. I'm not use to drawing children.

Funny you say about keeping secrets and stuff. I had contemplated a version of her which is learning dark dealings on the side, and her growing up to want to take the country in a different direction cause of it, but I may not want to do that kind of character for her XD We'll see. I'm glad you like her Smile

The heir and the spare, eh?
And one of the previous daughters is stone? That sounds like some dramatic backstory. Who'd he miff for that to happen?

The King had a daughter as part of a treaty with another country, the people he had a child with being a crystalline specie. They don't know it, but the daughter runs on magic, and if she doesn't get it, she goes into a hibernation state- the statue. The main character is able to animate her cause he has super large amounts of magical energy, and is able to keep her sentient, and her taking his energy makes sure that he doesn't overload on magic. She's half human, half crystaline Art thumbnail She's the blond haired girl on the left. I considered making her totally colourless, but it was a little strange to draw, but her hair, eyes, and skin lack pigment. I'm still deciding on her eyebrows and lashes as it makes her difficult to draw :/

Love the skin tone and hair color combo
    • Mar 1, 2016, 10:14:22 PM UTC
Thank you Smile Originally the two tone was for only the men in the family because they were protecting themselves from a law that only affected men, but when I created Pandora, I felt she needed a more iconic hair look, and brought a variant two tone which I really love. Art thumbnail It looks super cute on Ophelia too Big Smile I figure that the family all have different variants of the two tone- Ophelia has blond at the front as well as underneath. I want to swap around the King's a bit so it's different to Bryan's Smile

I'm still learning skin tones, but the olive family of skin tone is how I originally wanted the residents of their country to be, but I didn't know how to colour that and they ended up being only a slightly dark shade of pale ^^; I had no idea just how dark the colour I wanted was- I'm glad I know now Smile I just need to practice colouring correctly (I'm not sure how I'm gonna do it as dark skin photographs terribly.). So far though, I think I'm no longer scared to vary the colour to brights or darks so I think I can do some formal training in colour theory without panicing Big Smile That's a big step for me! XD I use to be so scared of colour XD

Oh I didn't realize her hair was two toned until you mentioned it. I guess I thought she was wearing a black hood or Vale. Looks cool though.
        • Mar 2, 2016, 9:01:29 PM UTC
Oh yeah- I didn't give her hair many highlights, did I? XD I see what you mean. It's two tone though Smile The hood thing is sort of on purpose too to make it worse. I'm giving myself design options and hoods is one that I wanted for mystery for a hidden option I was going to do with her XD *caught*
