It's not a heart if you mean the object behind them, although I can see why you'd think that. It's a green stone Pikorua. In Maori culture it symbolises an eternal bond of fate between two entities that are willing. It's often gifted to symbolise friendship or love for another.
In my story, Bryan has this pendant as a translator so that he understands English (He is from another universe). I chose the twist because the pedant has a spell upon it that bonds the understanding of language between the person the spell was cast on, and himself. It also crossed over symbolically with the bond that these two have for eachother TuT
