Inspired by the second book in The Wingfeather Saga, North! Or Be Eaten by Andrew Peterson (the Christian singer-songwriter, not the other one with the larger number of books to his credit. :p) Cub's a human boy who was magically altered - and at this point in the story has very few memories of his prior life.

      I was thinking more thin quilt? Not actually sure newspapers are common in his country, especially in smaller towns like he grew up in - they've gotten as far as the printing press but they're also under enemy occupation right now.
