I was in the same boat for a while, but they just look so pretty when done right that I had to try and adapt to designing them. My thing is just to use soft brushes for highlights on each feather and open area that would need it, then blur it a small bit, then just mess with the layer filters and opacity until it looks right. And Osprey is just a matter of shape and placement, but I add some small feather details to make it look pretty.
