Ella comes from a crowded futuristic world headed for an expected apocalypse. She was an intern researcher at The Sun, a megacorp dedicated to developing ways to get offworld before doomsday, and selecting those who would leave. When an unstable portal opened in her lab, she was awed by the readings it gave off, and volunteered to be a part of the first team to test if it was safe. The portal closed during the away-team's journey, leaving Home on the other side. Ella has very mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, she has been uprooted, and everything she knew is behind her. On the other hand, the system of portal worlds is something beyond her wildest dreams. So much space, and resources to spare - the ability to emigrate through portals would effectively solve the doomsday problem, and render The Sun obsolete. She wonders if another portal could ever open to her world. She worries that The Sun's management might have something to say about it if it did. But she wants to know everything. How many portals are there? What are they like? ...How many of them would be willing to support people from home?
