Valthier was born to a house of Dark Elves as the only son. His mother was harsh, and demanding, but it was his three sisters who were particularly cruel to him. They tormented Val, and mocked him daily. Sometimes they beat him up just to show that they can or to remind him he should be afraid of them. Val was expected to become a mage, and to that end he was taught the basics of magic and spellcasting, though he would not make much progress. He was also taught fencing, and is a skilled duelist with rapier, saber, and one-handed swords of a variety of lengths, as well as with daggers, bucklers and small shields, and canes and staffs.During his adolescence, Valthier met a man who he would become close friends with, and spent hours at a time nearly every day at this older elf's home. There he learned that this new friend was a vampire, and that not everything his family told him was true. This sparked Valthier's determination to be more independent, and to live for himself, and not be mistreated by his abusive family.Valthier fell in love with the vampire, and had a short-lived relationship with him, before his family discovered the vampire's secret undeath. They put the man to death with fire and wooden stakes, and Val was heartbroken. He vowed revenge. But before the man was slain he had turned Val into a vampire.Valthier orchestrated the murder of his family, burned their house down, and faked his own death. Then, fleeing his underground home under the name Twilight, he travelled to a surface city via trade caravan where he lived among humans and other races of the surface.In order to survive his early years as a homeless migrant, he joined a prominent thieves guild that operated as a sort of dark elf mafia led by a deposed dark elf lord and the followers of his exiled house. Val, known only to this guild as Twilight (or affectionately Twi), worked as an underling on many lower-level crimes and as a clerk for more legitimate business, gaining both field experience and logistics experience while earning enough wages to afford meager housing and, eventually, more luxurious living quarters.Val was chased off from the guild, however, when another member, a mid-rank enforcer, discovered his undeath and swore to destroy him. Val had no choice but to leave his house, his job, and his affiliation with the guild, and flee again. Travelling under his birth name once again, Val came to a town where he was able to build his manor and start his own business. There he stayed, serving the patrons of his little tavern and lounge as an openly undead member of the community, fearless and proud.However, one day the town came under attack by a band of raiders who destroyed everything they couldn't steal. Much of Val's fortune was lost, and what little he had left he used to help the town rebuild. Then, he chose to set off as an adventurer, with the hopes of making the world safer.Val is a tall elf, standing at 5'10" and weighing a mere 124 lbs. His skin is an ashy grey, more pallid than it was in life, and his hair is long, straight, and glittering silver-grey. His eyes are a deep bright brown.He wears simple yet elegant clothes, usually a green long-sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and a black or brown vest, with black pants and leather boots. He has been known to wear silk or velvet jerkins instead of vests, and also sometimes wears dresses, or blouses and skirts.His arms have sleeve tattoos of green thorny vines twisting up from wrist to shoulder and red roses along them. He uses a cane walking stick, and always keeps a curved knife on his belt, and usually a sword as well.
