-- Wren --
Write a sonnet about the Autumn season.

“A sonnet is a 14 line poem, typically (but not exclusively) concerning the topic of love. Sonnets contain internal rhymes within their 14 lines; the exact rhyme scheme depends on the style of a sonnet.”

The crunch of leaves below the foot
The snap and pop of leaves hit by rain
The curl and color, shape and type, unique as always, underfoot
A twist, a flick, color lost in the blink of an eye as only shells of the beauty remain

A splash of red, silver, and green
Salmon returning, like clockwork, to ancestral waters
These waters, they have only once seen
Yet, to them they return, leaving behind sons and daughters

The crash of waves, powerful and strong
Black dorsals rise, mother’s lead, following food that is evading
The waves whisper and sing, for decades and eons long
Yet, as the song returns, and salmon swim, this song is slowly fading

A mother’s touch, a flash of color, homeward bound to waters unknown
There are many words to describe the season best enjoyed with others who we adore

As the summer heat begins to fade,
The leaves burst into vibrant hues,
Once more, I walk under their shade,
The crunching of leaves under my shoes.

Each year, I dream of this time,
Of when the sweet scent of baked treats that fill the air,
And which I sip the apple cider that is utterly sublime
Between bites of sweet treats I can't get elsewhere.

Huddled near the hearth for warmth,
I wrap myself in my blankets once more,
I rub my hands so they can be warmed,
A mug of warm cider sitting on the floor.

I close my eyes to listen to nature's song,
The winter winds yet to come along.
