Members Area Changes, website traffic

You may have noticed that the members area looks a lot different. I've made it simple so that more of your submissions can fit on the screen and so that it doesn't feel so cluttered. You'll also notice that your artwork and writing has a hit counter that you can view on the Submissions page. The hit counter started probably about a year ago but I never displayed the hits. Now you have a chance to see what kind of artwork and writing people are looking at. You may be surprised by the results. You'll probably also notice that the submissions that you took the time to put keywords and keyphrases for have many more hits than other submissions.

Right now, bogusred.net is doing well in the Google listings. Search for zelda fanart and bogusred.net is the first site on the list. vegeta fanart is number two. vegeta and bulma is number four on the list. And just searching zarbon puts Zarbon's Masterpiece Theater at number 3. It was at number 1 a few days ago. The success of bogusred.net's google listings is from content being added on a regular basis, filling in keywords, and from other tactics.

If there's anyone out there having trouble getting traffic to their site, there are five steps you can take to ensure high rankings on search engines such as google.
1) fill out META tags in the HEAD of all of your HTML pages including KEYWORDS and DESCRIPTION. Don't put too many keywords or keyphrases. The more you have, the less worth each word has. Keep it down to about 15 phrases.
2) Add new textual content daily.
3) repeat your keywords in the body of your page. If you want vegeta fans to make their way to your site, repeat the word Vegeta throughout your site. You'll notice that on the left of almost all the pages there is a link titled "Vegeta Fan-fiction."
4) Make sure your meaty content is not more than 2 or 3 links away. For example, if you start on the index page of your site and have to click through to gallery, then fanart, then a thumbnail before you get to the description of your vegeta artwork then that's probably too many steps. Put links strait to the meaty content from the index page and if you can, put links on all the pages like I have done. This also makes it convenient for your visitors to find what they want. (I added those links about a month or two ago and my traffic almost doubled.)
5) if you haven't done so already, submit your site to google and other search engines so that it can be spidered. To add to Google and a few other engines, submit your site to the dmoz directory.

It was about one year ago that I started to follow these steps. My traffic for January 2004 was 278 unique hits for the whole month. That's an average of 22 unique hits a day.
My traffic for January of 2005 is an average of 386 unique hits a day and it's growing! I've had over 5,000 unique hits for this month and the month isn't even over yet. I'm getting more hits in one day than it took me to get in a whole month before. That's pretty amazing, don't you think? And most of that traffic is from search engines. Primarily Google with 43% of my search engine traffic and Yahoo at 38%.
