A Song for Winter: Traditional Dress

Chapter 71: Traditional Dress

Traditional dress in the northern lands where William’s village of Drakthorpe sat was usually whatever was warmest or most protective. However, there were some variations from clan to clan. As William was the result of a union between Clan Drackonas and Clan Wintersong his β€œtraditional” clothing was a little mixed. Being both the son of a berserker and a witch made his fashion sense a bit different from others in the clans. The styles of both clans came together to form a new tradition that made him stand out among his people.

Clan Drackonas was infamous for their war-like ways that according to legends were the result of draconic influence. With the rage of dragons flowing through their veins, the warriors of Clan Drackonas cared little for fashion. Most of their clothes were whatever kept them warm and covered between raids. Different shades of blues and greys were favored for their tunics that were offered cut and patched from the various battles of the wearer. Trousers most commonly were earthen brown and often patched just like the tunics. Medium-weight chainmail armor made of crude iron was the most common for warriors that could afford it. Helmets were often deemed unnecessary and cumbersome while greaves were a luxury for the rare ones that could afford them. Axes were the primary weapon for most of the clan while swords were usually only wielded by those that could make or loot their own. Round wooden shields provided protection and secondary weapon for those that choose to wield them.

Clan Wintersong on the other hand was a more peaceful clan that was all descendants of the first witch to use the power of the Wintersong. Both male and female witches wore bright blue, green, and white colored clothing. Women tended to wear loose dresses that were lined with fur for warmth while the men tended to wear fur-lined tunics and trousers. Enchanted cloaks that kept the wearer comfortable in any weather were worn by most of the witches regardless of age. Armor wasn’t common amongst the Wintersong witches although when emissaries were sent out to other clans they often wore protective amulets. Weapons also weren’t common amongst the witches as they were a peaceful clan. Some witches had daggers or hatchets for harvesting spell regents and potion ingredients. Hunters used bow and arrow to catch wild game but rarely for battle. As Clan Wintersong was a nomadic tribe that traveled the northern wastes each of the witches had their own set of specially made goggles to protect their eyes from the biting cold.

As a child of both clans, William mixed the clothes of the respective clans to his liking. He became a witch that wore armor and used weapons like Clan Drackonas. While at the same time, William was a warrior that wore an enchanted cloak and an amulet of protection. Spells flowed from William as easily as he wielded a sword and axe. Despite being of two separate worlds he became the best of both of them to stand as a protector against the dark.
