Chapter 2: 2

Turns out that during harvest season, there was plenty of things to do. And plenty of things one could do with pumpkins. Sahari had already finished her arts and crafts project, and it was... Well... It was probably going to do well in the "abstract art" category at least. The long-leg didn't seem to mind; as far as she was concerned it was rather fun. But now that the creative spark had been lit inside her, the young tyto was off in search of more gourd-y canvases to exercise her artistic skills on.

Of course, there were plenty of pumpkins to work with, and in different sizes and colours, but like every artist, Sahari was being choosy about what she was going to work with. Not any pumpkin would do, she'd tell you if you asked. No. This one needed to be just right.

Up and down the rows she went, giving anything that initially looked promising a good going-over to ensure its suitability before deciding that "no; this one won't do".

Artists were, as a general rule, a perfectionistic lot, and Sahari was discovering her own brand of said trait. Meaning that she intended to work with the best she could get, even if her skill levels hovered around "total beginner".

Nope.

Not that one.

No good.

Poor bird. They just didn't seem to be good [gourd?] enough for what she was looking for!

"How about this one?" one of the farmers asked, rolling out a particularly large fruit. It wasn't his largestβ€”he was saving it for the "biggest pumpkin" contest to be held laterβ€”but this one was clean and free of all blemishes. It was also a nice, soft shade of white. A very nice shade of white. "I've been saving this one for... For... I don't know what, exactly, since there isn't a contest I can enter it into, but maybe you might like it instead?

Sahari gave it a thorough inspection. It wasn't misshapen, or bruised or discoloured in any way. And it wasn't so big that she couldn't carry it anywhere.

"You like it?"

Sahari trilled.

"Well if you like it that much, it's yours."

An excited hoot.

"Here. Let me help you with it so you can get started."

Yes. After a long, hard search, Sahari had finally found the gourd of her dreams, and now it was time to get to work.
